Panasonic track bike, 1980. Donated by Bruce Donagny

Hall of Fame Inductee Bruce Donaghy rode this bike to victory in a variety of track events. The frame was built in Japan by Panasonic for the Panasonic-Shimano team. Originally it would have been painted in team colors, but as an admirer of Italian Ciöcc racing bicycles, Bruce had it repainted after acquiring it as his own.

The bicycle sports a variety of upgrades over the years, but the Dura-Ace 10 chain and sprocket combination was original and innovative at the time. Reducing the industry standard chain pitch from 12.7 to 10 mm allowed size reduction of the front chainwheel and rear cog, achieving significant weight reduction.

“Uphill Climb” is a 2023 sports documentary directed by Jill Yesko that chronicles the pioneering female cyclists who competed in the first-ever Tour de France Féminin in 1984. The 35-minute film highlights how these athletes overcame skepticism, social stigma, and brutal mountain stages. More information about the film can be found at: https://www.uphillclimbfilm.com/

Jill Yesko is an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker. Yesko is also a former cyclist who represented the United States in the 1983 World University Games and competed in the Olympic Trials.

Jill’s other films include “Tainted Blood: The Untold Story of the 1984 Olympic Blood Doping Scandal” (available on Amazon) and “Broken Trust: Athlete Abuse Exposed” (available on Kanopy). She is the host of the podcast “The Bounce: Sports With a Spin” on WYPR and NPR.

Jill's writing has appeared in Women's Sports & Fitness, Shape, Fitness Swimmer, and numerous other magazines. She is a Fellow at the Center for Sports Communication & Media, Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas. Yesko also serves as a Board member of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.

With Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in full swing, many of the teams are riding Specialized Bicycles and today we're going back in time to the early days of Specialized bikes!

Check out this sleek Allez SE from ~1984, designed by noted frame builder Tim Neenan, with its mix of high-end Shimano, Suntour, and Specialized parts. While this bike is quite different from modern Specialized race bikes with their hydraulic disc brakes, electronic shifting, and featherweight carbon fiber frames, the Allez's Cro-Mo steel frame, its cable-actuated Dura-Ace derailleur, and Dura-Ace rim brakes are representative of Specialized's long history of building lightweight performance bikes.

U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame Inductee Eric Heiden rode this Cinelli TT Laser Time Trial bike in the 1986 edition of Tour de France™ ! He was a member of the 7-ELEVEn team, the first U.S. team to compete in the Tour. And he would later become a physician at UC Davis Health

Aerodynamics are incredibly important for a Time Trial race, and Eric Heiden's Cinelli is a textbook example of early aero bike design. The smaller front wheel and the low handlebar height allowed for the rider to get very low and out of the wind. The disk wheels also eliminated the drag of spinning spokes, allowing the rider to cut through the wind like a knife 🔪

Celebrating this day in cycling history. On July 26, 1976 American George Mount, 1997 Inductee and USBHOF Board Member, shocked the racing world by finishing sixth in the Montreal Olympics road race. 3-time Tour de France™ winner and U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame inductee Greg Lemond rode this Campagnolo Record-equipped TVT Carbon Fiber LeMond to victory in the 1990 Tour de France. This was his third and final TdF victory of his career 🥇🥇🥇

This bike is a gold mine for early carbon fiber frame design. Most notably are the metal lugs that hold the carbon fiber tubes together to create the structure of the frame.

Another noteworthy aspect of this bike are the beautiful Campagnolo Delta brake calipers and the Scott drop-in handlebars.

With in full swing, we've got a few bikes in the museum that were raced at previous editions of the Tour, and we want to highlight them!

The first one is this Felt F1 from Team Garmin-Chipotle. Danny Pate raced this bike at the 2008 Tour. On Stage 15, Danny snuck into the four-man breakaway over the Col del Agnel and finished third on the day. 🚵

The bike itself is equipped with top-of-the-line Shimano Dura-Ace components, and on its catalog, Felt lists the size 58cm of this bike as a whopping 13.98 lbs 😱😱
