Today, we honor and celebrate Vickie Anne Palmer on her birthday! Known as The Refiner of chiropractic, Vickie Anne Palmer, H.C.D. (Hon.), F.P.A.C., has built on her family heritage by continuing to provide leadership to the chiropractic mission. She grew up on the Palmer campus and has served the College in various roles through the years. She joined the Palmer College Board of Trustees in 1978 and was elected chairman in 1987. As Board chairman, she was instrumental in developing the concept of Palmer’s multi-campus system. In 2008, she officially concluded her 21-year tenure as chairman, though she continues to serve on the Board as secretary general and as a member of the Executive Committee. She’s a distinguished Fellow in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic and in 1987 was granted an honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree. Happy birthday, Vickie!

“Toward the rear of Twildo one finds a small grotto, above which hangs a rustic clock, the dial of which spells C-H-I-R-O-P-R-A-C-T-I-C. Over the grotto is the deck of a steamer completely equipped with life preservers and oars, all bearing the characteristic epigrams of B.J., the originator and designer of the unique rustic court. “

“Midway in Twildo is a well-equipped soda fountain, offering refreshments, and tables of polished logs inlaid with curious designs and permanent checkerboards, which afford diversions for an idle hour. Possibly the most unusual part of Twildo is that of the floor, which is composed of every kind, shape and size of marble, mosaic and tile without regular order. “

“One of the most attractive and recent additions to The P.S.C. is that of “Twildo,” a delightfully rustic spot tucked in between the imposing Classroom and Administration Buildings. One enters through a great vine-covered arch, from which are suspended a number of bells, embossed with various and original Quotations, and through which one sees the recently dedicated bronze bust of D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic. “ This excerpt is from the October 1921 Yearbook

Daniel David Palmer was born on this day in 1845 in Ontario, Canada. By 1865, D.D. and his brother T.J. set out to the United States. The next 20 years he was involved with school teaching, growing berries, gathering honey, and running a grocery business. Around the age of 40, D.D. began his career of Magnetic healing. He discovered chiropractic in 1895 and two years later shared it with humanity by teaching the science, art and philosophy to others. This one person changed the world forever by sharing his gift of chiropractic. Happy birthday, D.D. Palmer!

Exhibit close-up: As you enter the doors of Vickie Anne Palmer Hall, you’ll see a large exhibit off to your right. This is our recreation of D.D. Palmer’s office down at the Ryan Building. You’ll notice a number of original items in this case including the washroom bench that was used to adjust Harvey Lillard, D.D.’s collection of canes, and his chair. The door was also taken from the old Ryan Building located on the Southeast corner of Brady St and Second St before the building was demolished in the 1980s.

A must-see part of the Palmer Family and Chiropractic History museum is the Wet Specimen. This specimen was put through a series of chemical solutions called the Spalteholtz method in which the bone materials were taken out, leaving the original soft tissue shape, size, position and contour. You can view this interesting piece on the second floor of Vickie Anne Palmer Hall, right outside of the main auditorium doors.
