We were saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Charles Doswell, III, on January 18th. While we had heard that he had health issues for a while, I think it was still a shock to hear that he had passed. He was a mentor to so many in his teaching at OU and work at NSSL He left a vast body of important work that stands as a monument to his many-decades-long career. He leaves his wife Vickie, his son Chad, and his daughter Heather.
He was on WeatherBrains episode 635.

Twisters came out yesterday and the meteorological community is in a whirl!
Some have compared it to the original from 1996, and said it might be even better. One thing is for sure...the production team went straight to the best sources of information, the actual meteorologists and storm chasers.

Several days ago, I saw that the new annex to our local museum has a tornado simulator. It will be interesting to see how the Fairbanks Museum's simulator is different that others we have seen and made.
The first big tornado simulator we ever saw in person was at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. It was designed by artist/scientist/inventor Ned Kahn. His next model was made for Expo2000 in Germany, and was EIGHT STORIES high! Ned graciously gave us a personal tour of the Exploratorium and the exhibits he was working on. I noticed that one of them is apparently in their collection. It is a large glass ball mounted in a way that it can be rotated on its base. As it is turned, the pearlescent hand-lotion-thick liquid inside the globe swirls and spirals, creating lovely patterns. I vaguely recall Ned saying it was some kind of detergent, but I could be wrong.
Over the years he has gone on to create dozens more exhibits, sculptures, and other art pieces for museums and companies all over the world, including the Museum of Natural History in NYC. In 2003, Ned received a Genius Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
