Every May we host a large Native American festival and twice a year we host cross-country races.

🐸 Frog takeover at Oakville! 🐸

Look closely—you might spot a frog almost anywhere at Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center! They’re perched on the museum, hiding beneath the umbrellas, sitting on picnic tables and tucked among the bromeliads we were donated to sell.

We’ve been seeing American green treefrogs (Dryophytes cinereus) and gray treefrogs (Dryophytes chrysoscelis or Dryophytes versicolor) around the museum and grounds. Gray treefrogs are especially impressive camouflage experts, changing from gray or brown to green depending on their surroundings and conditions. They’re also excellent insect hunters—helping keep mosquito numbers down while they’re at it!

Next time you visit, keep an eye out for these tiny, sticky-footed neighbors. Where will you spot a frog around Oakville? Share your sightings with us! 💚🐸

EARLY DISMISSAL FRIDAY
All Lawrence County Schools will dismiss at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, due to anticipated traffic concerns in several school zones Friday afternoon.

The moon making an early appearance over Oakville. 🌙🇺🇸

We’re soaking in this peaceful view while getting the park cleaned up and ready for a BIG weekend! This Saturday, Oakville will welcome more than 4,200 registered runners and an estimated 10,000 spectators for the Gatorade XC Classic. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Today, our crew is busy mowing, cleaning, trimming, and getting the grounds ready to welcome thousands of visitors to Oakville. It takes a lot of work to prepare for a crowd this size, but we’re excited to see the park come alive on race day!

🚨 WEEKEND EVENT & TRAFFIC NOTICE — LAWRENCE COUNTY 🚨
Lawrence County is preparing for a very busy weekend. Multiple events are taking place across the county and surrounding areas, with increased traffic expected beginning today and continuing throughout the weekend.
🚗 ROCK THE SOUTH TRAFFIC BEGINS TODAY
Rock the South in Morgan County is expected to draw approximately 15,000 attendees per day.
With thousands of people traveling to and from the event, significant increases in traffic are expected along AL-24 through Lawrence County, particularly as attendees travel toward the event site in Morgan County.
Motorists traveling AL-24 toward Morgan County should expect heavier-than-normal traffic and possible delays beginning today and continuing through the weekend.
🏈 FRIDAY NIGHT
In addition to Rock the South traffic, multiple high school athletic events are taking place across Lawrence County Friday night.
Drivers should expect increased traffic around local schools, athletic facilities, and major roadways during afternoon and evening hours.

Saturday will bring several additional large events across the county:

If you're traveling through Lawrence County this weekend:
➡️ Allow extra travel time
➡️ Expect increased traffic
➡️ Use caution around pedestrians and event traffic
➡️ Watch for emergency personnel and traffic-control operations
➡️ Please be patient and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination
Lawrence County EMA will be working alongside law enforcement, fire/rescue, EMS, and our regional emergency management partners throughout the weekend to support these events and maintain situational awareness.

♿️ Accessibility is the future, and at Oakville, we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to experience our museum, park, programs, and history.

We are so proud to see Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center featured in The Journey to Accessibility, highlighting the incredible work taking place across North Alabama with Tami Reist leading the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourism Association!💙

Our journey began with a free onsite accessibility assessment from Wheel the World, which helped us take a fresh look at our facilities and identify practical ways we could better serve visitors with mobility needs. Through the Tourism ALL-a-Bama program, we have also learned more about creating welcoming experiences for visitors with sensory issues including those on the autism spectrum and their families. 🌻

One of the improvements identified along the way was the need for more accessible sinks. Thanks to the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association Accessibility Advancement Grant, Oakville was able to install two ADA compliant sinks with touch free, motion activated faucets. 🚰

Projects like this truly take a team. A huge heartfelt thank you to AMLTA and the County Chamber of Commerce for helping us get this improvement. We are a proud part of the Lawrence County School System and will continue to make partnerships, and commitment to making accessibility a priority. 🤝

Accessibility is not a single project or a box to check. It is an ongoing process of listening, learning, identifying barriers, and finding ways to do better. We are proud of the progress being made at Oakville, grateful for the partners helping us along the way, and excited about what comes next. ☀️

🦅🌳 A bird’s eye view of Oakville! 🌳🦅

Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center is so much more than a museum. Our grounds include acres of beautiful parkland, our lake, walking trails, and an amazing 5K competition cross country course right here in Lawrence County! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🌿

These incredible drone photographs were taken yesterday by Bryce McConnell, a member of the Lawrence County High School Cross Country Team, and they offer a perspective of Oakville we rarely get to see. 📸🚁

They also showcase the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. A huge thank you to Oakville’s groundskeepers and staff, along with the wonderful volunteers of the great Lawrence County Alabama Runners’ Club, Inc., who have worked hard to get the course and park ready for our first big cross country event of the season tomorrow! 👟🏁

From the mounds to the museum, from the lake to the starting line, Oakville is a place for history, nature, recreation, and community. 💚☀️
