A little more room for Oakville history!

A huge thank you to Lawrence County High School for donating their former trophy case to Oakville. It has found a new home in our museum hallway and a new job showing off a few of Oakville’s ephemera and artifacts.

Inside you’ll find glimpses of Oakville life from the 1830s through the 1880s, from handwritten documents and newspaper clippings that tell surprisingly big stories about this little community. The case also preserves memorabilia from the building of the Oakville museum and the story of Mr. David Goodlett carving our Sequoyah statue.

Some pictures from our buzzzzz worthy day at Oakville! 🐝🌼🦋🌻

We had a wonderful time participating in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census in partnership with Alabama Extension! Our citizen scientists made wildflower seed bombs and headed into the garden with clipboards in hand to count, observe, and learn about the pollinators hard at work around us. 🔎🐝📝

And the garden certainly understood the assignment! 🌼🌸🌿 Between the marigolds, blanket flowers, wild bergamot, milkweed, coneflowers and all those busy little visitors, there was plenty to discover.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a day of science, sunshine, flowers, and a little pollinator appreciation! 💛🐝🦋

Thanks to the Tennessee RiverLine for choosing Oakville Indian Mounds as their site to host a Level One Training - Introduction to Kayaking Skills Course through the American Canoe Association last Saturday, August 15! Attendees left with certification and skills to safely paddle independently or to lead groups on the water.

Join us at Oakville Indian Mounds on Saturday, August 22 at 10:30am to participate in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census!

Join citizen scientists across the Southeast for this fun, 15-minute activity that helps researchers learn more about the pollinators visiting our gardens, yards and communities. We will explore the Outdoor Classroom at Oakville, you will be assigned a plant to observe for 15 minutes and record which pollinators and how many visit that plant in that timeframe on a checklist, provided upon arrival.

All ages can participate!

We will make wildflower seed bombs and have a short lesson in the Museum on identifying pollinators before we head outside!

A huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Ginger Layman Davis, our wonderful Mother Goose, for bringing history to life today at Oakville! 🪿🕯️❤️

Families had such a fun time enjoying her delightful storytelling, learning about the history of candle making, and trying their own hand at dipping candles. It was a joy to hear classic nursery rhymes like “Rub-a-dub-dub,” “Pat-a-cake,” “The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker,” and “Jack Be Nimble” while discovering how candles were once an everyday necessity.

There were lots of smiles, a little melted wax, and many proud candle makers headed home with their creations. Thank you, Mrs. Ginger, for sharing your talents and making history so much fun. Lots of thanks to our museum helpers today too. Everyone loved it! 🕯️✨📖💛
