Letter from the President
Dear Friends,
“These are the times that try men’s souls”…..so wrote Thomas Paine, the author of Common Sense, in December of 1776 in a pamphlet entitled “In Crisis”. Paine was trying to spark the revolutionary spirit in the American colonies....pushing men, and women, to fight for their independence. He continued: “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot may, in this time of crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of men and women. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
Unlike 1776, we are not fighting a tyrannical royal mother country, but we are fighting for our lives and safety from an invisible force wreaking unbelievable sorrow and pain in every corner of the US. I believe it will forever change the way we conduct our lives here and around the world….who would have even dreamed this nightmare 6 months ago?
But thankfully, in Stokes County, being a mainly rural county has served us well, so far, during this pandemic. Hopefully, COVID-19 will be under control or eradicated by this time next year, if not before. We can only go forward responsibly and carefully…and hope for the best.
That being said, I hope this finds you and your families safe and well…weathering this silent storm. We, the Board of Directors of the Stokes County Historical Society, will be evaluating, as state, local and federal guidelines mandate, what events we can safely continue or hold in the future. As of now, we have no events until possibly next fall… or maybe next year. We are saddened to do this and hope all of you understand and respect our decision. This has also put a halt to any beginning of work on the Museum. Together we will bear up and get through this !
As Paine said the men and women who have not shrunk from the service of their country “deserves the love and thanks of men and women”. We salute all who are continuing to “serve” during this trying and dangerous time. I’m sure we all know someone who has continued to heal, to teach, to work, to comfort, to protect, to lead, and to serve in many different capacities over the course of the past few months. It has indeed been a trying time for everyone…but these everyday heroes give us the resolve to come back stronger and determined to triumph.
Stay safe and well….we can’t wait (well, we can wait) to resume our programs and events honoring the rich history of the great county of Stokes!
With thanks,
Patti Dunlap

Can't find her death date or place which I need. They may have died in Surry County near the Hamburg area.
There is no 1890 census, no appearance in the 1900 census and no mortality census for 1900. Deaths were not required to be kept by the Counties until 1913, and I didn't find anything in probate or will records.
Hudson Williams was the son of Charles Williams and Leathy Hutchison was the daughter of Benjamin Hutchison and Delila/Delish Wilkins.
Any help out there?
