Daly City History Guild Museum & Archive

Daly City History Guild Museum & Archive We are open Saturdays from noon to 3:00 PM. Closed on all legal holidays.

The Daly City History Museum is operated by the Daly City History Guild Museum & Archive, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit. We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of local artifacts unique to Daly City. We have interpretive exhibits assembled in a large two room art deco former library, originally built in 1920 and expanded in 1938. Among our

vast collection is a fully-restored 1907 fire department, hand- drawn chemical pumper, Ohlone Native American artifacts, and materials relating to the 1859 Broderick - Terry Duel, which was fought in part over the issue of slavery and resulted in the official ending of dueling in California. We also have a gift shop which features books by local authors, Daly City Centennial DVD, note cards, first-day commemorative postage, and more. There is no charge for admission to the museum, however, donations are always appreciated.

We were contacted recently by the son of DC Mayor Paul Green, circa 1952. He is asking about an antique cannon and informational plaque from Marchbank Park that went missing many, many, many decades ago. We've heard about them over the years, but don't know the history nor do we have any photographs or information.

If you know anything or have photographs, please let us know.

Thanks.

Both the Daly City History Guild Museum & Archive and the Colma Historical Association enjoyed our first time participating in the Historic Union Cemetery's Memorial Day ceremony in Redwood City. Other history organizations had tables during the festivities. By noon, it was all over. Some of us enjoyed delicious barbecue up the road afterward.

A wonderful follow-up from Guilder and Ocean Shore Railroad program attendee Ray Wille.

A Family Anecdote about the Ocean Shore Railroad
I have lived in Daly City my entire life. My mother’s maiden name was Mary Markovich. She had 2 brothers, Pete and Pat. Pete Markovich was well known in Daly City. He ran a business on Mission Street that is still there, and was very active in civic affairs. Pat Matkovich was a golf pro and managed golf courses in Richmond, Silverado and Franklin Canyon. He started his golf career as a young lad caddying at the San Francisco Golf Club that borders Westlake at the San Mateo county line. Uncle Pat was born in 1908, so this probably would have been about 1918, when the Ocean Shore was still running trains, but after bankruptcy, when it was in the hands of the receivers. I enjoyed Mr. Van Zuiden’s presentation on the Ocean Shore Railroad. As you could see from his map, the Ocean Shore approached Daly City on a left turn, following what is now Alemany Blvd. The pink colored Alemany Blvd. overpass crossing Junipero Serra Blvd is on the former Ocean Shore right of way. This passes by the southeast corner of the San Francisco Golf Club, and the right of way was visible from parts of the golf course. At the time, John Harvey, who also went by J. Downey Harvey, was a member of the San Francisco Golf Club, and my uncle Pat caddied for him. By this time, post-bankruptcy, Harvey was no longer president of the Ocean Shore Railroad. My uncle told me that when he was caddying for Harvey and they would see an Ocean Shore train pass by, Harvey would pause, point to the train, make a somewhat gross gesture that I will not elaborate on, and remark sarcastically, “That’s where all the money went.”

We would like to thank Guilder John Bell for keeping our back yard immaculate and labeling our cleaning tools for much better organization.

Thank you, John!

According to Celeste, our docent on duty, an individual who visited the museum a couple of weeks ago was so impressed that he returned today and deposited $50 in our donation box!

Thank you very, very much!!

We're sorry to have lost several of you who decided not to renew your memberships. We had hoped you would find value in what we do to preserve DC local history and also the quarterly programs we offer.

You are always welcome back to the fold.

We're attempting to either rescue the plaque and bench or else advocate for restoration. The fact that this bronze plaque has not--yet--been stolen is amazing.

We don't know if it was a gift to the former Mission Street Bank of America, now gone, or to Daly City for community benefit.

If you know the history, please share. We are checking with the Host Lions, which is still very active.
