What role does Black joy play in resistance and activism? šŸ¤”

For generations, Black joy has been both a refuge and a revolution.

Black joy is resistance because it refuses to let struggle be our only story. It is the laughter that rises in the face of hardship, the art that tells our truths, the music that moves us forward, and the love that binds our communities together. Black joy fuels movements, sustains those on the front lines, and reminds us that we are fighting for more than just freedom from oppression—we are fighting for the right to live fully, to celebrate, to rest, and to thrive.

On February 25, we are gathering to celebrate that joy—not as a trend, not as a performance, but as an essential part of who we are. Black Joy Unplugged is a space where stories are told, where voices rise, where art, music, and poetry affirm that we are still here. That we have always been here.

It is a moment to come together, to breathe, to be seen, to be heard. It is a reminder that in a world that often tries to break us, we build. In a world that tries to silence us, we speak. In a world that tries to erase us, we write our own stories.

There is no cost to attend. No permission needed to take up space. No barriers to entry. Just a space to be surrounded by people who believe in the power of joy, culture, and collective liberation.

How today started….vs how it ended.

Let me start by saying that EVERYONE is safe and NO ONE was harmed today. Thank you Lord. 😭

What was supposed to be a two year anniversary celebration for the bookstore turned into another example of the power of community.

I was sitting behind the register with .n and all of a sudden I smelled smoke.

I looked down. There was fire from the floor to up past my knees and we were both within arms reach of all the flames.

I grabbed a calendar and tried to fan it out (0/10 would not recommend), and quickly realized it was time to run.

What a day.

Thank you so much to everyone who literally helped me through the fire today. .landria.a and every person who was in here. I’m so grateful.

To those who grabbed my son while I dealt with the chaos. I can’t thank you enough. To those that stayed and helped put this place back together, I feel like God winked at me through your presence. I refuse to quit.

As my nerves are settling, my heart is overflowing with gratitude. God is still so so good. 🄲

2 years already?! 🄲

It’s going to be a joyful celebration at BLACKLIT next weekend, and we would love for you to join us!

We will be sharing throwbacks and behind the scenes this week of the journey, so let us know what parts you want to see. And, if you have any pictures or videos that you don’t mind us sharing, please send it our way!

With all of the chaos going on between trying to manage the security threat that’s been harming our operations, we honestly aren’t even sure if this is hello again or goodbye for THIS location….however, we still choose to celebrate and honor the resilience and the community that got us to this moment.

We know it’s a little bit of short notice, but if you can take some time out of your Saturday afternoon to come celebrate the history we are making as the first and only bookstore in the city of Farmers Branch, we would really appreciate it.

There will be a few of your favorite vendors on site showcasing their art and products, so be ready to spread the love! Please RSVP (it’s free) and let us know you are coming, so we can save you a seat.

If you can’t make it, please send some prayers our way as we navigate what’s next for BLACKLIT.
