About the gallery

Cydonia Gallery is a contemporary art gallery. Our programming is committed to co-operating with artists whose practices reflect conceptual research. We approach art as a cultural good related to reciprocity, praxis, and discourse.

The name ‘Cydonia’ refers to a region on planet Mars. Astrophysicist and cosmologist Carl Sagan wrote and spoke frequently about red planet, even drafting a letter to future Mars explorers months before his death in 1996. This Sagan quote influenced the vision of the gallery: “Mars has become a kind of mythic arena onto which we have projected our earthly hopes and fears.”

Cydonia Gallery opened in September 2014 with a curated exhibition and catalogue entitled Ex-Y: Representations of Contemporary Masculinity, featuring 9 different artists who explored masculinity after all three waves of feminism. Since its inception, CYDONIA has received critical praise from numerous press outlets locally and internationally. The Dallas Observer noted: “[T]he perfect combination of education and eye candy can be found at Cydonia Gallery. This commercial space features a roster of international artists, all of whom show potential to rise to art-stardom. [The gallery] has a keen eye for talent, offering numerous artists their first exhibitions in the United States.”

Cydonia was among the first gallery in entire North Texas region to have internationally-focused programming. The gallery introduced the contemporary, primary market to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area. Cydonia the first gallery in the region to bring programming to fairs in Berlin and Toronto. The gallery team has consisted of 3 women since its inception.
