Tampa Bay area musicians, fans and concerned residents are encouraged to gather the second Sunday of every month in an effort to restore Dade City's old Cow Palace to its former glory. A sixty-year-old dancehall said to have once been a regular stop on the old Chitlin’ Circuit of traveling musicians, the place fell into disrepair and ill repute the past several decades until Mississippi transplant Al Brown purchased the property in 2012. His goal and ours is one and the same: To have the property formally recognized as a historic site, but to serve as a living museum, showcasing not only regular performers, but the commercial, educational, cultural, spiritual, political and artistic contributions of the local African-American community at large. The recently-shuttered Moore Elementary/Mickens High School lies just up the road, the Pioneer Florida Museum a couple miles north of that. Downtown, the old Pasco Twin Theater and bowling alley have given way to banks and office space. It is important that The Cow Palace is rescued while the opportunity still exists. We are actively seeking and genuinely appreciate any input from other interested parties. If you’d like to be involved, please send us an email at [email protected].

Florida’s Juke Joints
Posted on May 28, 2014
In the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, if you had plenty of money and a city’s worth of entertainment at your disposal, you might have chosen to spend your Friday evening at the movies, a night club, or a high-quality restaurant. If, however, you were in rural Florida and looking for something a little less formal and a heap less expensive, you were more likely to drive out to the local juke joint.

Florida’s Got The Blues!

On Saturday, February 2 The Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center, located in Mann-Wagnon Park, is celebrating the opening of the “Florida’s Got The Blues” exhibit with a performance by Walker Smith & Nitro.
The exhibit is an engaging exhibit, exploring topics like Early Blues, Florida Women and the Blues, Depression Blues and the WPA Recordings, and Contemporary Blues. Did you know that the blues artist with the highest number of 78–rpm records were Tampa Red, who grew up right here in Tampa? The exhibit will run until the end of April - Event Time – 2:00-3:30pm
Also coming up, on Sunday, February 24, The Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center will present "Florida Soul." Ray Charles. Sam and Dave, James and Bobby Purify. These are just a few of many great soul performers with Florida roots. This rich but under-appreciated musical heritage is revealed in John Capouya’s award-winning book, "Florida Soul." In an engaging multimedia presentation, Capouya plays classic soul music, shows vintage photos and shares his research in an event that’s as entertaining as it is educational. Free admission, refreshments. - Event Time – 2:00-3:30pm

Bradfordville Blues Club

Howdy!
I work for WFSU TV in Tallahassee, and we have a club here called the Bradfordville Blues Club, that under a former name used to be a stop on the Chitlin Circuit Tour
I'm planning to do a TV Feature on them so if you have any great resources on the history of the Chitlin Circuit throughout North Florida / South Georgia I would be very grateful !
Thanks!!

If anyone's got memories to share about Dade City's historic Cow Palace (whether first hand or by reputation), we'd love to hear from you.
A handful of us are hoping to restore the place to its former glory and need all the help we can get!
Thanks.

The Chitlin' Circuit Preservation Society will be changing the day of the monthly meeting to the third Thursday of each month back at the Cow Palace itself, 13431 Bull Rd. in Dade City from 7-8pm. If you have not yet got a chance to see the Cow Palace, please come out tomorrow night and see the real deal of authentic juke joints in the Tampa Bay area. An old Pecky Cypress barn built in the late thirties and turned into a juke in the late fifties, was probably the Bay area's largest black entertainment venue at the time, hosting such stars as James Brown, B.B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Ike Turner, Joe Tex, Archie Bell and the Drells and many others. If you are interested in preserving the history of the Blues this is for you, we are open to new ideas on how to preserve these old buildings for future generations and hope to see a lot of new faces as well as old tomorrow night. See you there!!!
