The famous Crystal Falls Mineral Spring was discovered by accident in the Fall of 1887 by a crew digging a test pit exploring for Iron Ore on the lower portion of Superior Avenue (13 Superior). At a depth of 60’ the shaft began filling with cold, sparling water eventually making its way to the surface and overflowing onto the ground. The water was claimed to have substantial health benefits with many people visiting the spring to drink the water and carry away containers filled with the elixir. Peter Larson established a water bottling business using the water in 1891 at a factory he constructed just down from the mineral spring site. The water was distributed nationwide and a bath house was also built using the water. Larson sold the business to the Jackson Brothers who in turn sold it to Nick Maki who continued the venture into the 1920’s.
Over the years many “old timers” gathered daily at the spot to discuss worldly affairs with locals and visitors stopping for a refreshing drink while passing the area. In the early 1970’s a crisis developed with the flow from the spring becoming greatly reduced until it eventually stopped in 1975. Magically, the spring was rejuvenated when the City of Crystal Falls “semi-secretly” installed a small waterline connected to City’s water main to supply the fountain only to be permanently shut down by the Health Department.
