Friends, we have had to delay our Season opening for this year due to the condition of the harbor at Tangier Island. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District promised to have the harbor dredged by May 1st so we felt safe announcing our open date as May 23rd. However, they still have not started the work and are not sure when they can get to it.

Dredging the harbor is necessary every year so that boats and cruise ships can safely navigate the more shallow water near the dock.

We have reluctantly made the decision to postpone our 2026 Season open date to July 1st.

We apologize for the inconvenience but there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. We are totally dependent, as are the island folk, on the services of the USACE.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please message this page or call the office at 410-968-2338.

Arrowheads Found on Tangier Island

Prior to the arrival of the European colonists, Tangier Island was a summer retreat for the Pocomoke Indians for centuries.

Although not much is known about these people, their existence is evidenced by the thousands of stone arrowheads that have been found all over the island.

Almost any morning after gale force winds have been blowing all night, new arrowheads can be found on the beach, uncovered by the blowing away of sand.

The discovery of an ancient oyster midden offshore, thousands of years old, consisting of a huge pile of shells which could only have been deposited by humans, is further evidence that there was a regular population on Tangier, at least in the warm part of the year, long before it had an English name.

The enormous amounts of arrowheads and spear points found here also suggest the island probably was much larger than recorded history can verify, and home to many animal species.

Tangier Island is rich in history. Come enjoy our island this season!

If you're planning your first trip to Tangier Island, you're in for a unique experience.

Tangier Island natives speak a unique, 17th-century-influenced dialect of English, often called the "Tangier brogue" or "Island English," preserved by centuries of isolation in the Chesapeake Bay.

This rare, rhotic dialect blends Cornish, West Country English, and old Virginia tidewater influences, characterized by dramatic vowel shifts and distinct phrasing.

You may be lost for just a few minutes in the beginning but the natives are friendly and you'll gain understanding quickly.

Curious? Watch just a few minutes of this video recorded in 2008.

Golf carts and bicycles are available for rent from Four Brothers Crabhouse on Tangier Island.

Some of the island locals also provide guided tours using their own golf carts for a small fee.

Many visitors choose to walk around the island instead of riding to enjoy the beauty of Tangier in their own time.
