Davenport Homestead The Davenport Homestead is the only preserved pre 1800 yeoman farmer's house in Washington & Tyrrell counties available for visitation. till 3 p.m.

Davenport Homestead is in rural Washington County, North Carolina, near the small town of Creswell. It was built during the 1770's by Daniel Davenport, who served a six month enlistment during the American Revolution. The last Davenport lived in the home until her death in 1975. This descendant lived much like her ancestors did - without running water or electricity. In the late 1990's, other Dave

nport descendants gave the site to Washington County Historical Society. An annual heritage day is celebrated each year. In 2011, events are planned for October 22 from 10 a.m.

If you have a quilt made in Washington County, NC, will you loan it to us for the September 9 - 13 special exhibit?

We have space for 30 quilts, and our target is to display a quilt from each of our communities.

Did you know we have quite a few communities?

Plymouth, Roper, Creswell, Long Ridge, Long Acre, Macedonia, Skinnersville, Lee's Mill, Pea Ridge, Scuppernong, Cherry, and Mount Tabor.
What did we leave out? Let us know!

We will have the Washingtons Unite quilt on display, and want to give it a warm welcome, wrapped in the love of our home-grown hospitality!

Once you register, we can let you know when to drop it off (or do you need to meet for someone to pick it up) and when to pick it up after the exhibit.

for background on a September 9-13 special quilt exhibit of the "Washingtons Unite " quilt that will be in display at the Roanoke River Lighthouse and Maritime Museum.

We are looking for respresentative quilts made in each of our county's communities...Plymouth, Roper, Creswell, and Long Ridge, Macedonia, Pea Ridge, Scuppernong, Cherry, Skinnersville, and a few others.

It's going to happen in OUR Washington County!

What?

Did you know there are 31 Washingtons across the country, named for George Washington?

We got together and decided we could celebrate the 250 and our special bond by creating a quilt with squares from each participating county.

The quilt is finished and traveling from one Washington to another.

So mark your calendars for September 9 - 13 when we will proudly display this very special quilt.

It will be at the Roanoke River Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. Wednesday through Saturday, the museum is open from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m.
On Sunday September 13, we will have a special meet and greet from 3 till 5 p.m.

Be sure to sign our guest book, and if you are willing, we will take your picture and put it here on the America 250 Washington County NC FB page as our scrapbook of memories.

Show up and be part of this 250 event that celebrates US NOW.

Okay all of you Davenport Homestead followers!

You helped us have a great day on April 25 at the home place.

This Saturday, June 6, we will be commemorating the American Revolution in other ways. Check out this list.

We promise you there is something for everyone.

And definitely don't miss the fireworks. Every year they are spectacular. But this year? Expect a little something extra!
