Mountain bike pioneer Charlie Cunningham will be honored at the Marin Mountain Bike Hall of Fame on August 8th. Charlie began building bikes in 1977 and is credited with inventing or helping to pioneer welded aluminum mountain bike frames, toggle brakes and extra wide front hubs, zero dish 136 mm rear hubs, Type 11 racing forks, roller cam brakes, Type 1 towing forks, L.D. or gooseneck curved stem for drop bars, tow flips, and Ground Control tires. Charlie was once quoted saying "The mountain bike experience in its purest sense happens when the bike is working in perfect harmony with the rider and the terrain. This experience in its many forms is what so many people in today’s world need so much and what I hope to contribute in some small way." Charlie passed away on June 2nd, 2026. One of his early creations can be seen on display in the mountain bike exhibit space at the Crested Butte Museum.
