We’ve had to share bad news with our Facebook audience before and as our followers we thank you for always being by our side while we go through tough times. But this is by far the most difficult post we’ve ever had to make. Because we know how much he was loved by the entire community we felt it necessary to make the announcement that our precious boy Stevie is no longer with us. For the past 17 years he has been the truest friend and most loyal companion we could ever have asked for. He has survived being mistaken for a stray and hauled off to a farm for over a month, being locked in the upstairs of a building to the brink of starvation, countless tangled with birds, snakes, rats, dogs, paper bags, peacock feathers, and anything else that threatened the security of his fiefdom. But last fall, he was injured, and though he rallied, it seemed to be the beginning of his decline. Though this winter and part of the spring, we thought he might just be slowing down with age, his movements became more labored and he lost his appetite. We thank Rocking KM for the lengths they went to -humoring us as frantic cat owners by sending blood samples to Cornell University and ordering him special food. It wasn’t until his weight dropped substantially that we were able to detect the cancerous mass on his kidney that the first scan missed. By the time we found it, he was down to 4 pounds. How any living thing could lose 3/4 of their body mass in under a month and survive is beyond comprehension. That’s how strong and full of life our Stevie was. However, it became apparent that he was suffering and that is something we never wanted him to do. He deserved much more than that. Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Monna Metzger for being available to us on the Sunday of a memorial day weekend to help us say goodbye to our precious boy. We know he will live forever in our hearts, and there are memories of him throughout our years of sharing him with all of you that will continue to trickle in and we are so grateful for each and every one of those. Any good vibes you can send our way we would also thank you for. This big old building is very empty without our little buddy.

Not much point in prolonging the announcement any longer! We had hoped to get all red tape taken care of first, but word is starting to get out, so let’s talk about the future of 120 W. Main!
Full disclosure, we have both given a lot of the last 7 years of our lives to this building; the last 17 to the business we built. We will always treasure the relationships we have forged along the way, but we both also have other things we want to give our time and energy to. Alexander ArtWorks creations will continue on a limited and selective basis, but this big ole building needs a job, so we starting asking what we would like it to be…
We are both a little sentimental, a lot nostalgic, and very much hometown kids. We started reminiscing about how fun it was to grow up in Council Grove and what we missed about that place. We also thought about the people that have graced the pages of Main Street’s history books and how they taught us about hospitality and the simplicity of being with people who laughed together and looked out for each other. We hope that’s how we’re remembered. That’s what we’re hoping to create. We were trying to figure out what to call this new endeavor; something that would explain all that in a couple of words – one name stood out, but it had already been used, and rightfully belongs to another building on Main Street. So ladies and gents, we hope you will be as excited as we are about the next best (maybe better?) thing:

*PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST*
Most of you are aware that we have closed our retail storefront, and some of you (who read enough of our last post) know that we are still planning to continue our custom metal and private art party aspects of our business, just on a limited and selective basis. What some of you may not know is that we have been through multiple scenarios as to what we can do with this big ole building of ours, and have finally settled on one that feels right. We can't tell you when exactly things will happen, because there's red tape and lots of stuff that's out of our control right now. Just know that we are excited and hope you all will be too. As always, we want to add to - never take away from - our wonderful downtown that we love so much. In fact, this idea has been inspired by one of our favorite places on Main Street, and our vision is to create a space where our hometown can be celebrated and appreciated by anyone who visits.
Keep an eye on our social media for progress updates, an opening date announcement, and an invitation to follow the new business page.
And if you feel you must comment, please be kind: unless you've tried to run a small business in a small town through multiple recessions, then by all means throw the positive encouragement our way!

They say all good things must come to an end: and this is truly the end of an era for us. We have made the difficult decision to end our retail presence here on Main Street. It has been a fun and wild ride over the past 17 years, and it has truly been an honor to have been part of a beautiful season of revitalization in our community. Alexander ArtWorks will continue to operate, just in a limited and selective capacity. We also are in the planning stages of a re- envisioned storefront. Stay tuned for more on that in the future, in the meantime: come and buy some stuff! Most of this inventory will likely be last or limited edition, so grab a piece of history!😅

Just for funsies!

Steve came to our business as a young alley cat 15 years ago and adopted us. He is loved by our entire town.

Happy Holidays everyone! 🎃🦃🎄🎉
It’s been another busy year and it’s quickly winding down. That being said, Alexander ArtWorks will be OPEN tonight for Candlelight Charm! 🕯️🛍️
We look forward to seeing you all and want to make you aware that this will be our final holiday season as a retail location. It has been such a source of joy these past 16 years to share our hard work and (sometimes crazy) ideas with you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the love, support and friendship throughout those years. We’ve maintained our retail space through some pretty tough economic downturns; but the current climate, along with us both having other jobs that we love and feel pulled to give ourselves more fully to, has made it necessary to reevaluate what we have the time and resources to manage.
A2W is not closing, just restructuring. We will still do custom work, but on a limited basis. We will still rent the space for your parties, and we’ll still come and paint with you or do trivia with you at those parties if you ask us to. We have a vision for the way forward, we just ask for your patience while it comes into focus.
Tonight there will be snacks and drinks, giveaways and specials: we are eliminating our inventory so all is out for you to grab before it’s gone. We will mark things down as the holiday season moves on, but for now it is at its regular “limited edition” price😅
We hope you can make it in to see us, even if it’s just to pet Steve. And please: don’t think of this as “the end”, just a new beginning. It’s been a joy and privilege to be a part of Council Grove’s Main Street presence. We promise you there are still good things to come.❤️
