The Cornwall Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and presentation of the history of Cornwall and its people. Research requests are handled year-round. Summer exhibits are held in our newly-converted Victorian barn, open Saturdays and Sundays. We are a great starting point for exploring the Cornwall area, with walking tours, local history publications, lectures and family programs.

The North Cornwall Meeting House is opening its doors to the public for a special weekend celebration. Don’t miss a rare glimpse inside this historic 1826 gem, which was built by Hiram Vaill and is normally closed to the public. The full weekend schedule is listed below:

Friday, August 21 — Fun and Fact-filled Talk in the North Cornwall Meeting House sanctuary at 7:00 p.m., preceded by a reception and drinks at 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 22 — Organ Concert, Hector Migliacci Guest Organist at 5:00 p.m., followed by a reception and drinks at 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 23 — Old Home Sunday Worship, Kent Siladi, Guest Minister – 10:00 a.m. Picnic lunch under a tent following worship (bring your own lunch, blanket or chairs).

Alongside the 200th Anniversary Weekend events, the Cornwall Historical Society is presenting an exhibition on the history of the church, on view through October 11, 2026. We invite you to drop by the museum and make it part of your weekend celebration—hours are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Just one week to our annual Summer Party & Auction! Saturday, August 1, 5:30–8:30 p.m.

Join us for drinks, auction and dinner from the grill and enjoy an introduction to our developing backyard garden. David Grausman—voted Litchfield Magazine’s favorite musician in 2025—will be playing live music and all exhibits currently on display will be open throughout the evening for guests to enjoy.

Cost per person is $75 and RSVP is required by July 29.

TODAY & TOMORROW: Revolutionary War Militia Days (Cornwall, CT)

Step back in time to 1776 and experience firsthand the beginning years of our War for Independence. During this event the Cornwall Town Green will be the site of a Revolutionary War Militia Day event to commemorate the raising of a militia company as would have happened in 1776. The weekend will have authentic 18th century encampment, troop formations, musket firings, cooking and a host of other historic activities. Activities will be ongoing all day, Saturday and Sunday until early afternoon. Saturday evening will feature period music, singing and candlelight tours of the camp. Of special interest to parents and families, there will be a “children’s drill” on both days. We encourage everyone to attend and be transported. This will be a once in a lifetime experience.

How did a small farming village take part in a revolution? Between 1775 and 1783, the people of Cornwall found out. The events of these years transformed them from British colonists into citizens of a new American republic.

Please join us this Saturday, May 23, from 4–6 PM for the opening reception of “War Stories: Cornwall in the Revolution.” Enjoy light refreshments and meet guest curator Dr. Steven H. Jaffe.

The Cornwall Historical Society has been awarded a grant of $4,999 from Connecticut Humanities (CTH) in support of our upcoming exhibition "War Stories: Cornwall in the Revolution." Funding from this grant will assist with the cost of fabricating the exhibit and installing it.

Featuring historic documents, objects, works of art, maps, and other materials, most of them from the Cornwall Historical Society’s own collections, this exhibition will bring together stories of diverse individuals and the larger events of the Revolutionary War to teach visitors about the personal decisions Cornwall’s people made as they fought for liberty and independence from 1775 to 1783.

"War Stories" is guest curated by curator and historian Dr. Steven H. Jaffe.

Timed to coincide with the semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence, "War Stories" will be the cornerstone of Cornwall's celebration of our country's 250th birthday. It will provide an ongoing complement to events expected on Memorial Day, July 4th, the September Agricultural Fair and a June encampment on the Town Green. A complete schedule of programming will be announced in May.

"War Stories" opens Memorial Day weekend and will be free and open to the public through October 2026.
