While most people in the railroad industry remember April 1, 1976 as the day Conrail was formed, D&H fans will remember it as the day the D&H nearly doubled in size. When Conrail began operations, the D&H was granted trackage rights over large portions of the Conrail system to reach Buffalo, Philadelphia, Allentown, Newark, Harrisburg, and Washington and "compete" with Conrail on these routes. The D&H called these routes "Extension Lines" and also acquired locomotives, freight cars, and cabooses from Conrail predecessors to support the new operations.

The D&H issued a special March 1976 edition of its newsletter to employees outlining the changes that would take effect the following month. Read this whole newsletter for FREE on our website at https://www.delawarehudson.org/newsletter197603

We have begun scanning Tony Steele's phenomenal collection of about 17,000 slides that he graciously donated to us late last year. Tony was the Chief Engineer on the D&H and has some incredible images of rolling stock and right-of-way that could only be taken with his unique access. Once they are scanned, cataloging them and uploading them to our digital archives will begin. This will be a long project, so stay tuned!

The D&HRHS is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Historical Society to house the D&HRHS’s growing collection of D&H documents, photographs, and archival paperwork at the ELRRHS’s archives facility in Avoca, New York.

The D&HRHS is also happy to announce that it has received a $6,000 grant from Norfolk Southern to aid in its archival preservation and digitization efforts. The D&HRHS will be using a portion of this funding to digitize mission-critical portions of the Tony Steele collection of maps, drawings, and photographs, which was recently donated to the D&HRHS in its entirety by Mr. Steele.

The D&HRHS will be collaborating with the ELRRHS to use the remainder of the Norfolk Southern grant funding to acquire additional digitization tools that benefit both organizations and can be used in the shared space in Avoca.

Delaware-Lackawanna’s restored D&H RS3 4068 is on the inaugural run of NKP PA 190 (former D&H 18) today! We’re en-route from Scranton to Tobyhanna behind the 190, and the 4068 will be leading the return westbound trip this afternoon. The whole trip will be repeated tomorrow - this is the first opportunity in almost 45 years to photograph both an operating PA in the U.S. and a lightning stripe RS3 leading a train!

And here it is - the Delaware & Hudson heritage unit from Norfolk Southern! NS has been an outstanding partner in this endeavor, and we're so happy they made this happen. Our volunteers provided NS with original paint diagrams and artwork from both a D&H C420 and a D&H GP38-2 (including the original DuPont paint codes) and worked tirelessly to ensure that the paint colors were matched properly. Special thanks to the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad/Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society for preserving and providing the C420 diagrams, and thanks to the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway for acting as the testbed for color matching! The D&HRHS also provided NS with a license to use the trademarked D&H script logo, which is owned by our organization. Now that all of the research to repaint locomotives in lightning stripe is done, we've got more plans like this in store - stay tuned!
