While most people in the railroad industry remember April 1, 1976 as the day Conrail was formed, D&H fans will remember it as the day the D&H nearly doubled in size. When Conrail began operations, the D&H was granted trackage rights over large portions of the Conrail system to reach Buffalo, Philadelphia, Allentown, Newark, Harrisburg, and Washington and "compete" with Conrail on these routes. The D&H called these routes "Extension Lines" and also acquired locomotives, freight cars, and cabooses from Conrail predecessors to support the new operations.
The D&H issued a special March 1976 edition of its newsletter to employees outlining the changes that would take effect the following month. Read this whole newsletter for FREE on our website at https://www.delawarehudson.org/newsletter197603
