Back in the 1970s, out on FM 1314/Porter Road, the Conroe Drive-In was a destination for moviegoers. We recently received a small brochure announcing upcoming movies in July of 1971.

The theater was located where the Mims Baptist Church is located today. The church expanded its campus, purchasing the old Conroe Drive-in property in 1994.

If you lived in Conroe in the 1970's, then you know! We recently received the holy grails of donations at the museum... (drum roll, please) An original menu from Moon Palace Restraunt, the best Chinese food in these parts!

Moon Palace was not really a palace, but the food was fit for royalty! The restaurant was located on South Frazier just past Gladstell on the right (west side) of the road. The building was unassuming, the wooden floors were creaky, but the tables were set with linen, and the food came out on china!

Take a look at the menu and let us know what your favorite order was! If anyone has a photo of Moon Palace, we would love to have a copy at the museum!

Floyd Lee Baker of Conroe moved the Grogan/Cochran Home (now the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County) from downtown Conroe to its present location. Baker was born on April 12, 1929, in Humble, Texas and died in Conroe on June 7, 2023.

Floyd was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was a hard worker and a successful businessman. He started working at the age of 12 with his father. For over 60 years he spent his days leveling and moving houses. He also served as an Army Reservist for 17 years. Floyd loved the racetrack and anything with a motor. There was nothing he could not fix or build. After he retired, he enjoyed spending time with his family, telling old stories, riding his golf cart to the pond and driving to Burger Boy for lunch!
