Alright- so about that post from yesterday....
It would appear that many of you out there REALLY take your "Saving Private Ryan" seriously, so much so that the comment thread of a very obvious (or seemingly so) tongue-in-cheek status that was all in good fun had some of you acting like you were in the alley standoff yourselves, and others acting like Upham....
Before we kick this off, allows us to say this seemingly throw-away post which generated a handful of likes and a couple comments last year has generated nearly 800 likes and reacts, nearly 500 comments, and over 200,000 visits to the page in less than 48 hours. So, to those who understood that the status was good-natured fun and to those who thought we insulted their mother on Mother's Day, thank you for the increased traffic to our page. We couldn't have done it without you!
So now, let's set a few things straight:
1) "Saving Private Ryan" is a very good movie. It helped restore cinema-goers' interest in the Second World War, which had significantly waned in the 1990s. It broke the chain of Civil War dramas that were being pumped out in the 1980s and 1990s and brought 1944 to the audience in such a way that has yet to fully subside. It also changed the way that Hollywood depicted combat during war- which is a good thing.
2) Yes, "Saving Private Ryan" is a movie- nobody literally thinks that is a documentary - nor was that the intention of the post. It would appear that MOST of the over 700+ reactions we got indicate that the majority of you used common sense and understood the sarcasm and good humor behind the post, while some of those "keyboard warriors" decided to fire off their opinions faster than a German MG-42 gunner on the bluffs of the beach in the movie just laying on the trigger, devil-may-care, not giving a damn if they melt their barrels as they spewed constant rounds from an endless ammunition belt.
3) "Saving Private Ryan" is noted for being a very realistic and accurate portrayal of World War Two combat. That can be debated, and has been debated, ever since the movie came out. However, that is not at all the point of yesterday's post....at all.
4) The point of yesterday's post was to take ONE aspect of the film and offer a very passive jab at how the bunkers were incorrectly depicted in the film- which they were. I mean, God-forbid a Museum dedicated to the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall roll its eyes at how ridiculous those bunkers were portrayed in the film. But we did- and we will again.
5) Now, some of those jagoffs out there leveled the erroneous, outrageous, and outlandish claim that our post poking fun at the bunkers depicted ON A LITERAL FILM SET somehow meant we were attacking the sacrifices of the men who landed on June 6, 1944. These comments are too ludicrous to afford any level of respect, let alone an unnecessary amount of time to rebut. Simply put- such attacks were dumb, and most know that. Criticizing a film set does not equate to disrespecting those men who stormed the beaches. Don't be dumb.
6) Also, keep this in mind: you can like a movie. You can like a movie a lot. But do not confuse really liking a good World War Two movie with actually doing YOUR part to honor those men who fought on D-Day or any other battle in history's greatest contest. It's intellectually dishonest and lazy and doesn't score you any credibility points.
7) Lastly, there were many comments about 'the guy' behind this.... To be clear, the guy that is the sole proprietor and has put in all of the hard work to build this bunker? Well- "that guy" is actually a lady- as many of you know. I'll introduce myself to the masses in a post later this week.
To that end, if you would like to visit our bunker museum and see a recreated German bunker as it may have appeared on June 6, 1944, complete with immersive rooms and exhibits and hundreds of original weapons, uniforms, and artifacts from the war, please come by August 13, 14, and 15, 2026, from 12:00pm-7:00pm. We would be happy to take you on a personal tour.
