Boston Train of Artillery

In the summer of 1776, the Continental Artillery and Massachusetts militia were hard at work. They were tasked with fortifying and defending the area around Fort Ticonderoga from a potential British attack following the disastrous invasion of Quebec. Soldiers dug earthworks, built fascines, and constructed gabions to shore up the defenses around Ticonderoga.

Yesterday, members of the Boston Train of Artillery recreated this process at Minute Man National Historical Park as part of their event, “Forthwith to Canada.”

Join us in two weeks as the group will travel to Ticonderoga for their event, “Fleet and Fortification: The Science of Defense,” where we will continue to tell the story of the Northern theater of the American Revolutionary War!

Yesterday we had the honor of participating a night firing event at Minute Man NHP as a part of their “Celebrating Independence” program commemorating 250 years of independence! Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the beautiful evening! 🎇

Members of the BTA showed off their wide interpretive range at the Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence event last Sunday! We had artillery (of course!), sailors, genteel ladies drawing and sewing, market women, militia members, and cod merchants!

If you are looking for something to do this weekend come visit us atop Dorchester Heights, the very spot in which Knox set his cannons in 1776! We will be on hand displaying cannons, equipment and Revolutionary soldiers from 11-2pm on Saturday! And then we will be back on the 17th as well with our artillery park display to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Evacuation Day!!!

On Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. step back in time at Dorchester Heights and experience a Revolutionary era artillery encampment brought to life. Learn about the British evacuation of Boston in 1776, see authentic cannons close up and stick around for cannon firing demonstrations at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

Visitors may climb the newly restored Dorchester Heights Monument for sweeping views of the harbor and city skyline.

We are bringing all of Nashs’ journal entries to life nearly every day of this year 250 years to the day that they were originally written. Like todays entry speaking about an action during the Siege of Boston that resulted in the death of 4 Americans.

Yesterday a small detachment of Knox’s Regiment were on hand in Cambridge at the Cambridge Public Library with our N°2 and N°7 guns on display. A commemoration was held which remembered Henry Knox’s noble train and contributions to the Siege of Boston. Cambridge served as the headquarters of the Continental Army during the Siege.

We were able to engage with many interested passers by to talk about the importance of Henry Knox, his guns and the overall history of the Siege.
