Congratulations to Red Sarachek Z"L (NJSHOF Class of 1997) on his upcoming induction into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026!

Sarachek led Yeshiva University from 1940-1969 and helped shape the modern game of basketball with his innovative offenses, defenses and plays. His impact extended beyond the court as he mentored future coaching legends including our NJSHOF legend Red Holzman.

Sarachek's contributions to the game have earned him multiple Hall of Fame inductions.

Last week, Sara Whalen (NJSHOF Class of 2001) helped announce the launch of Long Island's very own USL League One team, set to kick off in 2028!

Whalen, the team's Co-Founder, will also serve as President, bringing her passion for soccer and commitment to the Long Island community to this exciting new chapter.

We are excited to see Sara take on her new role and can't wait to cheer on Long Island's newest professional soccer team!

August 19, 1969 - Ken Holtzman (NJSHOF Class of 1999) threw a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in a 3-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.

This performance added to his impressive MLB career that included multiple All-Star selections, 4 World Series titles and 174 career wins. His accomplishments on the mound helped establish him as one of the most accomplished Jewish pitchers in MLB history.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Skip Bertman z’l, who served as the head coach of the first-ever Maccabi USA Baseball team at the 1999 Pan American Games.

A legendary coach, leader, and builder of championship programs, Skip led LSU baseball to five national championships and 11 College World Series appearances during his tenure.

His impact extended far beyond LSU, including his time representing Maccabi USA at the 1999 Pan American Games. We are grateful for the lasting legacy he leaves on the game of baseball, Maccabi USA, and the countless athletes and people he inspired.

Skip was also a guest in 2021 on our Maccabi USA Sports Show, where he discussed his career in Baton Rouge and coaching with Maccabi USA (link in bio).

Our thoughts are with Skip’s family, friends, former players, and all those who knew him. May his memory be a blessing.

Congratulations to Jay Berger (NJSHOF Class of 2014) for his upcoming induction into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026! After a successful collegiate career at Clemson University, he played professionally from 1986 to 1991, winning three singles and one doubles title on the ATP Tour. In April 1990, he reached World No. 7 in singles, his highest ranking.

Jay represented the United States as a player in the Davis Cup in 1988 and 1990. He has coached at the collegiate and professional levels, including the U.S. Olympic tennis team in 2012 and 2016.

August 12, 2016 - Anthony Ervin (NJSHOF Class of 2001) wins the gold medal in the 50m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Anthony won the same medal 16 years prior at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With his victory in Rio, Anthony became the oldest individual Olympic gold medal winner in swimming at 35 years old.

In addition to his individual triumph, he helped Team USA win gold in the 4x100m freestyle in Rio. Anthony also participated in the 2017 Maccabiah Games, where he won three gold medals, including the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Congratulations to Marv Albert (NJSHOF Class of 1993) for his inclusion in the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026! Often referred to as “the voice of basketball,” he called games for the New York Knicks from 1967 to 2004 and was lead announcer for NBA games on NBC and TNT.

Marv Albert called many other sports, including football, hockey, boxing, and tennis. He covered major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, and Wimbledon Tennis Championships. He is recognized by his media peers and fans alike as one of the top sports commentators of all time.

Many of his close family are also sports commentators, including his son Kenny Albert (NJSHOF Class of 2025).

Mazel Tov to Amar’e Stoudemire, who will join the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on August 15, 2026! Amar’e was drafted 9th overall in the 2002 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns, where he was the 2003 NBA Rookie of the Year. Following the Suns, he played for the Knicks and later featured for Dallas and Miami, finishing his career with six NBA All-Star appearances.

After the NBA, Amar’e signed for Hapoel Jerusalem, helping them win the 2016-17 Israeli Basketball Super League. After retiring in 2017, he returned to Hapoel for the 2018-19 season and spent 2019 featuring for the Fujian Sturgeons. He spent his last season playing for Maccabi Tel Aviv, winning his second Israeli Basketball Super League championship and the League Finals MVP.
