Jeffers Petroglyphs is a 7,000 year old American Indian living sacred site in southwest Minnesota. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Owned and operated by the Minnesota Historical Society since 1966, Jeffers Petroglyphs is a sacred Native American site featuring approximately 5,000 petroglyphs on a large Sioux Quartzite rock outcropping that spans the Red Rock Ridge. The site is not located in either the towns of Comfrey or Jeffers, but in the rural outskirts of Comfrey, Minnesota on County Road 2.

re-open to the public on June 3. Hours in June and July: Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. August through Labor Day: Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 10 a.m. Sunday - noon to 5. September: Saturdays- 10 a.m. October: 2nd, 9th, 11th, 16th -10 a.m. SITE FEE to see the museum and petroglyphs: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, college/military w/ID and $8 for children ages 5-17. Jeffers Petroglyphs has many hands on activities that everyone can enjoy! Pictured is our Atlatl range and our Travois. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to participate in our atlatl demonstrations that happen throughout the day. The Atlatl is an ancient spear throwing weapon that predates the bow and arrow. The travois is a historical transport device pulled by dogs. Ours is full of hands on recreations that guests can try out themselves!

Join us to learn about quillwork from artist Alberta Warwas! On Saturday August 22, Alberta will join us at Jeffers Petroglyphs to highlight her quillwork, one of her many artistic skills. A few historic examples of quillwork can be seen in our exhibit too!

Alberta Warwas is a tribal member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Migizi (Eagle) Clan, and an artist based in Northern Minnesota. She expresses her art through a variety of Indigenous art forms, including beadwork, birchbark work, pine needle, porcupine quill, leather, textile, and rawhide.

This past Saturday, The Bell Museum Herbarium Collections Manager, Tim joined us at Jeffers Petroglyphs. He gave a short lecture, and then demonstrated how to record, identify, and press plant species. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! 🌿☀️

Through our back door a storywalk can be found; Our Sacred Land of Phežúta, by Tanaǧidaŋ To Wiŋ Tara Perron and illustrated by Holly Young, is available to read and purchase here at the Jeffers Petroglyphs and online through the MNHS! Through words and images, this tender story highlights the treasures of an abundant prairie landscape. Holly Young is also the artist behind our new mural, Wičháhuŋkake kiŋ héd Woyakapi - Where Old Ones Speak, which was commissioned for our new exhibit. Come check it out!

Saturdays at Jeffers Petroglyphs are full of fun and special events! In the ideal morning light, we offer Sunrise Tours on Saturday mornings that provide a more in depth history of our incredible site. We also host various special events and volunteer opportunities throughout the summer. Recently, Minnesota Historical Society volunteers from far and wide came to help us remove invasive species from our prairie. They focused on removing Queen Anne's Lace (Wild Carrot), and Wild Parsnip. Thank you, Volunteers! Your efforts help our prairie thrive!

The Bell Museum and the Minnesota Historical Society are proud partners! Recently, we participated in MN Unearthed at the Bell Museum. We got to share all about Jeffers Petroglyphs and play Chunkey with guests. Chunkey is a Native American game that originated in Cahokia. Chunkey is played by rolling a stone disc and launching spears at it. Thank you to the Bell for hosting us!

Recently, we hosted a flint knapping demonstration. Xoloti Bembe Ek (Alex Ek) gave guests an up close look at how early hunters created arrowheads and spoke about their uses. Birds, Bees, and Blooms! The dickcissel live in tall grasslands incluing right here on our prairie. It gets its name from its loud piercing call: dick-dick-ciss-ciss-ciss. Our ox eye suflowers are perfect for pollinators like the Coneflower Mining Bee, and BEE sure to join us in the evenings on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to check out our Fameflower.
