Order of Saint Maurice Presentation – 6th Brigade Headquarters, USACC

It was a distinct privilege to present the Order of Saint Maurice to Mr. Newsome (Legionnaire) and Mr. Maurer (Civis) of the 6th Brigade Headquarters, S3, U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Both Mr. Newsome and Mr. Maurer have consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting Soldiers, Cadets, and the Infantry profession through their professionalism, leadership, and dedication to mission accomplishment.

Their contributions to 6th Brigade Headquarters and the U.S. Army Cadet Command have had a meaningful impact on the development of future Infantry leaders and the continued success of the Army’s ROTC mission. Their recognition with the Order of Saint Maurice is a fitting testament to their sustained service and commitment to the Infantry.

Yesterday, we added 29 new names to our Global War on Terrorism Memorial here at the National Infantry Museum. 🇺🇸

Each name represents a life, a family and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.
National Infantry Association President COL (Ret.) Rob Choppa shared a few words with the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer about the importance of this moment and what it means to continue honoring our fallen.

🇺🇸 August 31, 2010 — Operation Iraqi Freedom Ends

On this day in 2010, the United States formally ended combat operations in Iraq under Operation Iraqi Freedom and transitioned to Operation New Dawn.

Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 19, 2003. Over the next seven years, hundreds of thousands of American service members would deploy to Iraq—many of them more than once.

For the Infantry, those years meant everything from major combat operations and clearing cities block by block to countless patrols, raids, checkpoints, and long days and nights spent alongside Iraqi security forces.

The transition to Operation New Dawn marked a change in mission. Beginning September 1, 2010, U.S. forces shifted their primary focus toward advising, assisting, and training Iraqi security forces while continuing counterterrorism operations and supporting the development of Iraq’s security institutions.

But a change in the name of an operation did not erase the sacrifice that came before it—or end the danger for those who remained.

Today, we remember the 4,000+ American service members who gave their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the thousands wounded, and every Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman, and Coast Guardsman who served.

For an entire generation of Infantrymen, Iraq became part of their story.

France had a Second D-Day.

On August 15, 1944 — 81 days after Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy — American Infantrymen hit the beaches of southern France.

The operation was called Operation Dragoon.

Leading the amphibious assault were three battle-tested U.S. Army Infantry divisions:

🇺🇸 3rd Infantry Division
🇺🇸 36th Infantry Division
🇺🇸 45th Infantry Division

Their mission was to establish a beachhead along the French Riviera, drive German forces from southern France and help open the vital ports of Toulon and Marseille.

American and Allied airborne forces struck behind enemy lines while Infantrymen came ashore along the Mediterranean coast.

The landings were a success.

Within 48 hours, American forces had driven as far as 20 miles inland in some areas. From there, Allied forces pushed north through the Rhône Valley, forcing the German 19th Army into retreat and adding tremendous pressure to German forces already fighting the Allied advance from Normandy.

Operation Dragoon rarely receives the recognition given to Normandy.

But for the Infantrymen who stepped off those landing craft on August 15, 1944, this was their D-Day.

Victory in the Pacific 🇺🇸

On August 15, 1945, millions awoke to news they had waited nearly four years to hear: the war was coming to an end.

Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s acceptance of the Allied surrender terms, bringing the fighting of World War II toward its conclusion.

For America’s Infantrymen in the Pacific, the road to victory had been measured in places whose names became forever etched into Infantry history — Guadalcanal, New Guinea, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and countless islands in between.

They fought through jungles, across beaches and over ridgelines against a determined enemy, often under conditions difficult for us to imagine today.

For those Soldiers preparing for what many expected would be an invasion of the Japanese home islands, the announcement meant something even more personal:

They might be going home.

Today, we remember the victory — but more importantly, we remember the Americans who made it possible, especially those who never got the opportunity to celebrate it.
