This Juneteenth Howard County Center of African American Culture celebrated our emancipation with the Denyce Graves Foundation bridges the past to future by honoring overlooked musical voices and empowering the next generation of world-class artists.

The audience response was overwhelming.

The foundation hopes to build opera companies, orchestras, schools of music, and cultural institutions that at last reflect our nation’s diversity.

George Carr
US Army Private
Born: ca. 1846, in Dorchester, Maryland
Served: Private, 30th U.S. Colored Troops, 1864 to 1865
Died: 1901, in Dayton, Ohio

Carr enlisted in the 30th USCT on February 7, 1864. He was wounded at Petersburg while “storming the enemies works.” His wounds included a comminuted fracture of the right tibia, a shattered ankle, buckshot in his right hip and bayonet wounds to both arms. He continued to fight despite his injuries. The wounds to his right leg never healed, and Carr suffered abscesses and bone sloughing for the rest of his life.

The mission of the Denyce Graves Foundation is to break down barriers to success for exceptionally talented singers of all backgrounds, thus having a lasting positive cultural impact on the world of American vocal arts.
