After the war that made him one of the most admired military leaders in history, Robert E. Lee devoted what influence he had to guiding the South toward recovery, stability, and renewal as part of a transformed nation. Learn about his last years, and his brief visit to Columbia, at noon this Friday, Oct. 9, award-winning history teacher Mike Burgess will deliver a free lecture titled “Strike the Tent: The Last Campaign of Robert E. Lee, 1865–1870.” The lecture, at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, is open to the public as part of the museum’s regular Noon Debrief program.

✨Member Perk: Tour of the Governor's Mansion✨

One perk of being a member of the Relic Room is getting to attend free member trips each year. We typically aim for one out of town, and one in town. Yesterday's was at the Governor's Mansion in Columbia!

Thank you to our Mansion Docent, Nancy for such an entertaining and informative tour. Some highlights included: a secretary dating back to 1750, wallpaper in the dining room that is also the same wallpaper as the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, a painting of the original state house, and even being able to see the oldest magnolia tree in the state!

Richard Nixon promised to “end the war” in Vietnam, as so many demanded. Of course, what he did didn’t accomplish that. It simply ended America’s active participation, and determined who was going to be the winner when the war actually did end.

Historian Michael Nelson of Presbyterian College will explain what Nixon did and the effect it had in a free lecture at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum in Columbia. “The End of the Vietnam War” will be presented tomorrow at noon, as part of the museum's regular Noon Debrief series.
