Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft Enriching lives through craft education and artistic experiences, both online and in-person, at our studios in Columbia, North Carolina.

Pocosin Arts offers workshops in clay, metals, painting, mixed media and more in professionally equipped studios. Our workshops are led by the best artists in any given media and last from two to four days. We also have lodging facilities for workshop guests in our beautiful new Riverside Lodge. Our studios and lodging facilities are also available for group rentals. Let us help you create your ow

n art escape or special group retreat. We are proud to serve our local community with evening classes for adults and after school and summer art camp for our youth. These programs are taught by one of our four resident artists who are educated in the arts and specialize in various media. To top it all off, the school is only a few steps away from the beautiful and scenic Scuppernong River and Pocosin Lakes Wild Life Refuge providing and endless source of inspiration to all who visit.

SESSION EIGHT RECAP! We wrapped up summer workshops last week with instructors Margaret Bohls Jamie Capps Nanette Pengelley and Rebecca Juliette-Duex. Students joined us for coil building pottery and vessel forms, immersed themselves in the art of washi and kozo fiber, explored fiber as an alternative material in a metalsmithing context and enjoyed a layer cake of woodworking delights making stools and learning traditional seat weaving techniques using Shaker Tape. There was no shortage of shenanigans, puns and ping pong to top it all off!

SESSION SEVEN RECAP! Here’s a look at last week’s workshops with Jackson Shaner Bette Barnett and Angela Eastman - students explored how facial expressions and form can create comfort and connection through sculpting human faces onto ceramics mugs. In metals, there was a deep dive into the creative potential of steel and the process of fusing gold and other metals to steel. And for Special Topics, students transformed wild invasive vines into useful baskets for harvesting and serving food. Can’t forget - there was paddle boarding and swimming too!

Join us in the studio for a Self-Directed Residency or our 2027 Winter Residency! Applications open till August 31, 2026. The Winter Residency offers a 2-week or 4-week session in January of uninterrupted studio time and an opportunity to work with artists across creative disciplines. Applicants propose a project for a primary studio area including ceramics, metalsmithing, and woodworking. Self-Directed Residencies are meant for focusing on personal exploration or collaborative projects, participants can tailor their residency from one week to a full month. Link in bio to learn more!

SESSION SIX RECAP! Last week we were honored to host instructors Katie Hudnall Marissa Childers Dana C. Fear and nicole uzzell . Students put their own spin and twist on traditional bandsaw boxes, created custom plaster molds from fabric and other textured materials to explore form and pattern, created transforming mechanisms for jewelry and blended balance, motion and abstraction into paper mobiles.
