🚨 One month left to experience stunning, CMA-exclusive exhibition Rodney McMillian: A Son of the Soil!

In this clip, the artist reflects on the meaning behind the title and how his South Carolina roots have shaped his perspectives on politics, culture, and society.

Born in Columbia and based in Los Angeles, McMillian confronts American identity by addressing complex histories — of class and race, of landscape and region, of art and a nation. He adopts a sweeping view of landscape representation as both a physical space and an ideological position. In large-scale painted expanses and films set in the Deep South, McMillian evokes land’s tillage and spoilage, histories of ownership, and the charged relationship between land and the body.

Don’t miss your chance to experience this powerful exhibition before it closes on June 28.

Binder Podcast: Fresh Takes

In today's episode, Ray wanders the newly refreshed CMA Collection galleries in search of his next favorite work of art. Joined by his wife, Dr. Lindsay McManus, the two take in the reimagined spaces before producer Drew lovingly puts them on the spot in a spirited round of "Taste Test." After the break, Kress Fellow Erin Kuykendall brings the museum's collection to life, sharing stories about some new and old favorites. It’s equal parts humor, insight, and a reminder that art is always better when shared — even if you don’t agree on the cows.

Let's take a moment to slow down and look at Tetsuo Ochikubo's Untitled (1958) as we celebrate AAPI month.

Hawaiian-born artist Tetsuo "Bob" Ochikubo was a founding member of an important group of Japanese American artists based in Honolulu known as Metcalf Chateau, named after the location of one of their exhibitions in 1954. Each member had studied modern art in cultural centers like New York or Chicago and returned home to Honolulu, where a local Abstract Expressionist movement soon flowered.

These artists were held to an unfair standard within broader Abstract Expressionist circles. Even though the New York School of Action Painting drew on Asian brush techniques, Metcalf Chateau were often either accused of copying Western styles or expected to infuse their works with Asian tropes.

A pioneer of modernist abstraction with a synergistic style, Ochikubo achieved considerable success by the late 1950s. He created this contemplative, gestural piece in the midst of receiving both the Whitney and Guggenheim fellowships.

"My name is Lauren King, and I am a development officer at the CMA — I’ve been here for four years this month! I manage the museum’s grant funding strategy, applications, and reporting. I worked with CMA Senior Curator Michael Neumeister on several grant applications for Rodney McMillian: A Son of the Soil, and we were thrilled to receive the support of Teiger Foundation, Terra Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the exhibition.

"I chose Untitled (flag) VI for several reasons. First of all, the hand-stitched text, while it references multiple dates — from the 1965 voting rights march to the author's parole in 1999, and the quote given in 2004 — remains incredibly relevant today. Voting rights continue to be in the news, including just recently with the Supreme Court’s opinion on the Louisiana v. Callais case. Like with so many pieces in A Son of the Soil, in this piece, McMillian uses art to highlight and rebuke longstanding, and ongoing, social injustices that disproportionately effect people of color.

"The other reason I chose it is more personal. I do various forms of needlework, and I have a B.A. in historic preservation, and those two things have combined into an interest in historic embroidery and fiber arts. When I first saw Untitled (flag) VI, I was surprised to find that it reminded me of an 1830s-era cross-stitch piece in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Made by a teenage girl named Elizabeth Parker, that piece is stitched with red thread on cloth and in 64 lines tells the often-tragic story of Parker’s life in domestic service, including abuse by her employers. Aside from the visual similarity between the two pieces because of the red lettering, I was struck by the fact that both artists chose to use embroidery to capture and communicate deeply personal experiences that continue to resonate today."
