Hobday's Artwork and Company

Hobday's Artwork and Company This gallery is the home to Hobday's Artwork and Co. Marilyn Hobday is a watercolorist. She has bee The Poplar Street School was renovated 18 years ago.

It was lovingly restored with respect to the period in which it was built. The building was one of the 1st elementary schools in Columbia, Pa. built in 1884, designed by an architect from Phila. The style of the building is Richardsonian Romanesque , Victorian. The chief characteristic of the Romanesque revival style is the semicircular arch used for window and door openings. Based on the work of

Henry Hobson Richardson, Romanesque Revival homes are grand and imposing. This building has a grand staircase, as you enter, you immediately see the staircase, with its ornamental turned spindles. You reach the fist landing, and then it splits into two separate staircases. It is said that 4 carpenters did the turnings for this staircase, as there are 4 different styles that most of the human eye cannot detect unless you are an expert furniture maker. It is a fitting place for a gallery and has been respected by its owners for 18 years. There are occasional openings and parties at this grand building. It has been home to the Hobday's artwork, and R. Todd Hobday's furniture for 18 years. Stop in some Saturday, you will be pleasantly surprised.

"You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby.
But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand."
Margery Williams -The Velveteen Rabbit, 1922.
