Happy Fall Semester! We are so excited to kick off the school year and see you back in the museums. We are located in the east wing of Ellis Library (across from Memorial Union) on the ground floor. There are two outside entrances - one off of Lowry Mall, and an accessible entrance off of Hitt Street. Don't be afraid to stop in and say hello!

In this edition of Where in the World is our Museum Staff, we take a look at Julie Chatman, our Museum Educator! She took a trip to Yellowstone National Park and Jackson, Wyoming in June.

Here are a couple of snapshots of the trip, featuring family members and her favorite vacation pastime – visiting other art museums! This trip highlighted the art of nature and the wildlife art at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

Samantha Driggers, a past intern for the Museum of Art & Archaeology, holds the spotlight after going on to intern at Crystal Bridges this summer!

"This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern in the Library and Archives Department at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. In my role, I worked on processing and digitizing the Francis V. O'Connor research collection housed at the museum. O'Connor was a renowned scholar of Jackson Po***ck and American murals, and during my time in the archives, I focused specifically on his research on Po***ck, labeling and organizing around five linear feet of material. Outside the archive, I collaborated with the Inclusion and Belonging team to plan a tour for 4-H visitors and had the chance to hear from people across the museum's departments, including People Services and the Registrar's team (many departments that I originally learned about during my internship at the Museum of Art and Archaeology)."

This lamp in the Museum of Art and Archaeology’s collection depicts Odysseus’ escape from the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus (Odyssey IX, 425-445). On the morning after Odysseus and his men blinded him, the Cyclops removed the boulder blocking the cave entrance to let his sheep out to graze, feeling the top of each animal’s back as it went by. Odysseus chose the largest ram and escaped by riding under its belly, clinging to its shaggy fleece. This episode was popular in Greek vase-painting in the Archaic period, but it fell out of fashion by the end of the sixth century BCE. Interest revived in the Roman Empire, and several lamps depicting this subject survive from the first and second centuries CE. The lamps consistently represent the scene with the ram facing right and Odysseus positioned so that his head and torso are below the ram’s head, while his legs extend horizontally under its belly. According to the poem, Odysseus made straps out of flexible willow branches. On well-preserved lamps like this one, the straps are visible: they wrap around the ram’s body and support Odysseus’ legs.
