The story of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College (FAC) begins with the founding of the Broadmoor Art Academy by Julie and Spencer Penrose in 1919. During the Great Depression, three dedicated philanthropists – Julie Penrose, Alice Bemis Taylor, and Elizabeth Sage Hare – envisioned expanding the Broadmoor Art Academy into an entire arts district under one roof. The FAC changed

its name, built a grand building, and opened as the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 1936. In August 2016, the FAC announced an historic alliance with Colorado College and on July 1, 2017, became the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. The FAC is deeply rooted in the legacy of its founders, who possessed bold visions, a deep passion for the arts, and dedication to the Colorado Springs community. The FAC honors this legacy and spirit today by providing innovative, educational, and multidisciplinary arts experiences designed to elevate the individual spirit and inspire community vitality, building on its history as a unique cultural pillar of the Pikes Peak region.

Three good deeds can create a much bigger ripple. | That idea is at the heart of both Come From Away and the Pay It Forward 9/11 movement. The musical tells the true story of how the people of Gander, Newfoundland, responded to the events of 9/11 by welcoming thousands of stranded strangers with extraordinary kindness.

Now, Pay It Forward 9/11 invites each of us to perform three good deeds for strangers and ask each recipient to keep the kindness moving forward.

A thoughtful note. A meal for someone who needs it. Coffee for the person behind you. No act is too small when it inspires another.

For 11 days, we’re putting kindness center stage.

From Sept. 1–11, the Fine Arts Center is joining the Pay It Forward 9/11 movement, honoring the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, through acts of kindness and service.

The campaign holds special meaning as we prepare for Come From Away. The musical tells the remarkable true story of how the people of Gander, Newfoundland, welcomed thousands of stranded airline passengers into their community following the 9/11 attacks—offering food, shelter, comfort, and extraordinary kindness to complete strangers.

Inspired by that same spirit, members of the Come From Away cast and crew and FAC staff will be paying it forward in ways big and small. We invite you to join us. An act of kindness can be as simple as buying coffee for the person behind you in line—and then encouraging them to keep the kindness going.

We’ll be sharing these acts through Sept. 11 as part of the . Follow along, find inspiration, and help us carry the spirit of Gander into our own community.
