Our Black Women’s History Month Celebration is this Saturday, 18 April! We are excited to announce that our keynote speaker will be author Regina Jackson,  the cofounder of Race2Dinner.

Born in Chicago in 1950, Regina remembers an America where everything was in Black and white. Burned into her memory are: the beatings and horrific treatment of civil rights workers throughout the south, the Goodman, Chaney & Schwerner murders, the murder of Viola Liuzzo, the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the murder of President John Kennedy. The violence perpetrated on innocent people going about their lives by white people. It is these memories that drive Regina to push for real change in America.

In 2019, she started Race2Dinner with Saira Rao, a local candidate who ran against incumbent Dianna DeGette to represent Denver in the House of Representatives.  They have traveled throughout the US, Canada, and the UK, championing radically honest conversations about racism and white terrorism.  This work led to a NYT Bestseller, White Women Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism And How To Do Better, a documentary, Deconstructing Karen, available on Tubi for free, YouTube, Amazon, and several streaming sites.

Remembrance of Jane Taylor

This Black Women’s History Month, we want to remember Jane Taylor, who was instrumental in establishing the AAGSCS (African American Genealogical Society of Colorado Springs) board when it was founded in 2000. Jane had a keen interest in history. While living she spent time teaching school in Connecticut and as a reading coach at Denver Academy. She helped Ms. Candice set up the African American Museum of Colorado Springs. Jane immersed herself in Colorado history through the James Beckwourth Club of Denver, especially the role African-Americans played in the development of the American West. Jane passed away after a battle with cancer in September 2012. Her legacy of keeping history alive through reenactments lives on.

Thank you Dr. George Houston for providing us a powerful message as the keynote speaker of our Black History Month Kick-Off Fair.

"There are people right now, young people here, that are looking to us to show them the way. My challenge is that you will take it."

We have this one chance to make a difference. All of this is part of our community. We have to find a way to stay together. When we work together we are impossible to defeat.
