Surface gallery is proud to present "Yes, and..." by Naomi Falk. Naomi has a created an eye-catching and thought provoking installation featuring fiber art.

About the exhibit:
"Dreaming through improvisational play, I make my way through these anxious times and momentary nows. Inspired by Ross Gay, Muriel Rukeyser, among many more people, creatures, and events, I ponder the delight and difficulty of living together in this “human place”. What does it mean to dig through what remains (donated fabrics, clothing, textiles, stuff)? What is lost and found? Through these processes, I piece together new stories, discovering softness, survival, and abundant possibilities.",-Naomi Falk

About the Artist:
Ruminating on our relationships with manufactured and natural landscapes, Falk’s work considers grief, loss, and communal and environmental survival. She explores the stories and implications embedded in (still useful) recycled and reclaimed objects (clothing, textiles, and construction materials).

A tinkerer and explorer she builds in playful iterations—is it better this way or that? Through collaboration and conversation with people and places, Falk plays where material, cultural, and ecological histories intersect, creating sculptural and fiber-based works and immersive installations. How might foraged materials be gathered and reframed to build objects and experiences that comfort, support, challenge, and sustain us?

Falk has exhibited at well-respected regional and national venues and done residencies in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and throughout the United States. A university art professor for 20 years, she was recently the Fall 2024 Fibers Fellow at Colorado College. Falk lives and works in Colorado Springs, Colorado and leads natural dyeing workshops with Blue Hands Art and is Co-Creator of www.WhatDoWeDoNow.art and a new local art collective, Blue Acorn Art Lab.

Surface Gallery is honored to present, "A Rewilding Journey" by Gail Nelson. Please plan on visiting this art installation, which opens this Friday. Gail has carefully and beautifully created work that exquisitely displays nature's ability to rewild itself.

About the exhibit:
Everything in nature is moving and changing; nothing is static. This observation spiraled into an art installation based on how nature grows and rewilds. A Rewilding Journey demonstrates how art and nature connect to create a repurposed habitat. The relationship between biodiversity and creating with mixed media is explored with materials that had a life prior to their inclusion in an artwork. Recycled paper, yarn, water-based paint, collaged botanical prints, willows and wood come together in a 3D space full of organic shapes, movement and eco themes.

About the artist:
Gail M. Nelson is an eco artist creating at the intersection of multi-media, ecology, and repurposing. Gail graduated with a Master’s degree in fine art from Colorado State University and she makes her home with her husband, dogs and garden in the mountains of Colorado where they are pursuing
a more sustainable lifestyle. Rewilding has a very special meaning for the artist as she plants native flowers, shrubs, and trees while removing invasives, collecting seeds, and embracing the messy in her organic garden. Although a biodiversity crisis is already here, we can all help nature bounce back.

Gail considers her art practice to be her volunteer work and the net proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to a local group that helps with rewilding: the People and Pollinators Action Network.
