Chopping up some content from the book and some of the beautiful scenery in the Rocky Mountains. This was taken near the Crestone Needle in the Sangre de Cristo range in Colorado by yours truly. We were flying back to Taos, NM from Denver after a patient transport.

The Pursuit of Perspective details some of my most memorable EMS calls, spanning a 20+ year career as a ground and flight paramedic. I wanted to take a different approach to the book than just recalling and writing the stories themselves. I wanted to find the meaning within the suffering, the silence, and the humor. Nietzsche once wrote about “writing from peak to peak” and allowing the reader to explore their own valleys. Some of the best feedback I’ve received so far has been exactly that—they felt the stories but it also allowed them to reflect on their own.

This book touches on the full emotional spectrum of EMS…messy, honest, and sometimes funny in the “you shouldn’t laugh at this but you will” kind of way. If you’re into real-life memoirs with heart, grit, trauma, and those 2 a.m. thoughts that hit harder than sirens….then this one is for you!

When I was 4 years old, I had a dream of becoming a writer. My whole childhood was filled with notebooks full of stories. So naturally, I became a paramedic instead. Hahaha.

I never let the dream go though, and as we all know, EMS is a “story factory” of sorts. So I wrote a bunch of mine down. 20+ years of ground and flight….lessons from the streets and the sky. Initially, this started out as a way to just process the calls since writing has always been one of my outlets. People have always told me “you really should write a book”…so I finally made it happen! It’s been in and out of the Top 10 on Amazon’s Best Seller list for the last three weeks, and I woke up today at #5 as well as another “Top New Release” badge.

Life has occurred, and our computer pretty much went gonzo, but we are trying to get things back up and running. It's been a while, but I decided to resurrect a couple of pieces that we had left from old projects. I think I still got it.

Hey everybody, its Diana. My mother passed away a little over a year and a half ago and I fell away from doing my art. I recently started back up again, and have my own art booth in my son's tattoo shop in Pueblo West. I wanted to share with you the painting I finished today.

Here's a little snippet/teaser from my new book. It's part of a 3 part poem called "The Humbling Howlers". I wrote it about 4 years ago. The idea came to me while I was laying out on the grass in the yard at 3am—skygazing with my dog. The coyotes were going crazy that night and sparked the idea for this. The full poem is published in "The Pursuit of Perspective"....Currently one of the "Top New Releases" on Amazon and in the Top 10 on two Bestseller categories.

Pt. I: The Howl

A scream echoes through a hollow desert night,
Otherwise still as terror.
I had drowned my sorrows on the rocks,
Hearing the sounds of my cupbearer.

A haunting song that carries a tune—
Without a word, they speak.
Some are frightened and fear they are wicked,
But I consider them the meek.

They’re misunderstood;
Their screams come from darkness.
So do our own,
It’s the shadow we must harness.

Listen closely and you’ll hear the joy of a mother,
Crying because her baby told her that he loves her.
Pay attention and you’ll hear the sorrow,
Of the mother who was told her baby won’t see tomorrow.

You’ll hear the precious moment when a father meets his son,
And the voices that told the veteran to reach for the gun.
The sweet sounds of the first breaths of life,
Mixed with the agony of the old man trying to wake up his wife.

Hey everyone — long time no see.

Most of you have followed my work here or other social platforms for years, back when I was building metal art and trying to keep up with orders at 3 a.m. But before any of that… I had one dream I’ve carried since I was four years old:

I wanted to be a writer.

This weekend, that finally happened.

I published my first book — The Pursuit of Perspective — a memoir from my 20 years in EMS and flight medicine. It’s dark, honest, philosophical, and real. Not a hero story. Not sugar-coated. Just the truth of what this job can do to a person, and the meaning you can find in the middle of chaos.

Somehow… it’s already climbing the Amazon charts in First Responder Memoirs, sitting in the Top 10 and peaking at #4 so far!

If you’ve ever supported my work, shared my posts, or cheered me on through past projects — this one means even more. Thank you all for your time! Here’s the Amazon link if you’re interested. KU readers get it for free! Available in ebook and paperback.
