Digital preservation of the cultural hertiage of Malta and the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

The Malta Study Center maintains a digital collection of over 2.5 million manuscript images and a microfilm collection of more than 16,000 documents and dossiers of documents from Malta, covering the period of the 12th to the 20th century. The materials include the Archives of the Knights of Malta, the Cathedral Museum in Mdina, the Archives of the Inquisition, ecclesiastical records of the dioces

es of Malta and Gozo, and musical compositions. The Center now sponsors digitization projects to preserve the history of Malta and the Knights of Saint John. It acquires antiquarian and modern publications dealing with Malta's history, literature, and culture, in addition to materials pertaining to the Knights of Saint John and Mediterranean history.

Not all volumes of the Registro delli patenti et bollettini of the Magna Curia Castellaniae are bound. The records The National Archives of Malta also include boxes of loose papers, most of which suffer from water and humidity damage. Our digitization project helps preserve these documents waiting for long-term conservation care.

HMML's Malta Study Center is pleased to co-sponsor the one-day seminar, "The Order of Saint John and Family Archives: Mapping Hidden Networks of Memory" in partnership with the Library Information & Archive Sciences at UM, Archivio di Stato di Firenze, and generale Archivi to be held 11 June 2026 at the Archivio di Stato di Firenze. Attendance at the seminar is free and open to the public. The seminar is co-organized by Dr. Daniel K. Gullo and Dr. Valeria Vanesio.

My sincere thanks to the Order of Malta - Grand Priory of England for inviting me to present at their Chapter Talk at the Priory in London, where I explored the role of images and iconography in cultivating the Order of Malta's identity and spirituality in early modern manuscripts and printed works. HMML's Malta Study Center uses digital technology to bring together museums from diverse countries so that their archives, libraries, and museums can communicate each others shared history, such as William Kirkpatrick Riland Bedford's late 19th-century study of the Archives of the Order volume 2173, which is now housed in the Museum of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem digitized by HMML's Malta Study Center. When women professed as sisters of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, they did so with the permission and approval of the Prior of the Order that oversaw their community. Here we see the acknowledgment of two conversi entering the women's community of San GIovanni de Fieri in Pisa in 1791, and that their entrance has met all constitutional requirements for the monastery and the Order.
