Manuel Garza (b. 1940), is an American artist known for his landscape paintings of Central Texas. Born into a family of migrant workers, Garza developed a love for the Texas landscape and the beauty it contains at a very young age.

With his intricate lighting, colors, and brush strokes, Garza is able to bring the Texas landscape to life for his viewers. “I am a landscape artist,” Garza says, “but wildlife is part of that landscape. It adds life.” Garza always paints a variety of animals into his pieces including his signature butterfly. No matter where his paintings are found they will always have the power to connect their viewers back to the Lone Star State.

Happy Birthday to James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), famously known for his painting "Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1," aka "Whistler's Mother."

Whistler's signature was a stylized butterfly with a long stinger for a tail. It's said it combined both aspects of his personality: while his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, his public persona was combative.

"Collision" explores the contemporary art scene in Houston during the '70s and '80s.

Read how James Surls, a chainsaw-wielding sculptor, established an unsupervised outpost in the University of Houston art department. Inside a dirty, cavernous warehouse, a new generation of Houston artists discovered their identities and began to flourish.

Published by Texas A&M University Press.

In this expansive and vigorous survey of the Houston art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, author Pete Gershon describes the city’s emergence as a locus for th...

With the help of the Matthew Gaines Committee, Texas A&M University students are joining together to raise awareness and funds to place a statue honoring Matthew Gaines and the 12th Texas Legislature, on the College Station campus. Last fall, members from the Texas A&M Student Government Association, the Texas A&M Black Student Alliance Council, and other student organizations worked diligently on a fundraising campaign for the statue.

Our staff had the pleasure of seeing Luis Jiménez's fiberglass sculpture, "Border Crossing," at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which is a complementary piece to his lithograph of the same name in our collection.

The lithograph of "Border Crossing" is on display now in the exhibition "Represented: Celebrating Diversity in American Art" in the Stark Galleries, and the fiberglass sculpture can be seen at The MFA Houston in The Audrey Jones Beck Building.

Happy Birthday to photographer Dorothea Lange (1895–1965), most notably known for her iconic image "Migrant Mother."

Lange's early studio work consisted of portrait photographs of the social elite in San Francisco. At the onset of the Great Depression, Lange turned her lens from the studio to the street. Her photographs during this period bear kinship with John Steinbeck’s "The Grapes of Wrath."

Watch Featured Speaker, Haben Girma, from the 2017 Annual Meeting

Haben Girma is the daughter of refugees. She's also a deaf and blind lawyer with a degree from Harvard.

At the 2017 American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting, Girma told stories of how disability has driven innovation, like how a man built one of the first working typewriters in 1808 so his blind girlfriend could write him letters.

Girma advocates for making public spaces more accessible.

Joan Hill (b. 1930), whose Native American name is Chea-se-quah (Redbird), has three works of art in our exhibition, "Represented: Celebrating Diversity in American Art."

“All of my work, whether traditional or contemporary, owes a debt to my Creek-Cherokee heritage for the teachings of my beloved parents and grandparents. I was also taught to have a deep, spiritual faith in God, a love and respect for the land, nature, the elements and the powers of creation, with a feeling for the eternal and the monumental. Consequently, I am inexorably drawn to the beauty, illusion and mystery of Native American legends and history, which serve as inspiration for the images I use to create a world, not as ‘seen,’ but as it is ‘felt.’”

Congratulations, Graduates! Did you know there's a sculpture on campus in honor of you?

"The Graduate," located on the south side of Evans Library, is a gift from the Class of 1966. It depicts the stylized head of a young man emerging from a form known in mathematics as a mobius band, a symbol of continuity of the Aggie Spirit.

How to paint a royal baby: why we need a new kind of portrait this time

Congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, on the arrival of their new baby boy!

Historically, royal children have been portrayed by some of the greatest artists of the ages. But is a heavy, dramatic painting appropriate for such a modern royal?

Jonathan Jones: From Holbein to Velázquez, from the Medicis to the Tudors, royal children in painting always seem weighed down by destiny, their childhoods denied. It should be different this time

NAILED IT: The Body, Pain, & the Pursuit of Perfection

MFA visualization student Mallory Kohut explores the body, pain, and the pursuit of perfection in the context of ballet and modern dance training.

Dance and art can both be outlets for expression, but they can also demand high levels of achievement. These works examine this tension through paintings, sculpture, and fibers. By combining ideas of scale, gesture, and distortion, they examine the question "How does control encourage or impede the creative process?"
