Just under 7 years later, the Post Office Department took over management of airmail and hired Max Miller, the very first airmail pilot hired by the Department, to take the first leg of the inaugural flight. He departed from College Park Airport on August 12, 1918, marking the beginning of regular airmail service. This winter, Tangier Island, Virginia, and its 250 inhabitants, were cut off for about three weeks. The Chesapeake Bay froze, and the snow was too thick for any planes to land on its airfield. Eventually, a Maryland ice breaker made its way through the ice to bring supplies and restore connection to the mainland.

90 years ago, the Big Freeze of 1936 similarly isolated Tangier Island and its 1,600 inhabitants for more than two months. Conditions were severe, and official rescue efforts to bring aid to the island struggled. College Park Airport manager George Brinckerhoff made several humanitarian flights to Tangier, delivering food, medicine, and other essential supplies. On his second flight, he was forced to make an emergency landing. While rushing to obtain medical supplies for his sixth trip, he was even arrested for speeding.

As we observe the International Day of Peace, Brinckerhoff’s actions serve as a reminder of the difference one person can make through kindness and service.
