Save the Date October 2: Latinas in Aviation Global Festival 2021

Did you know that female representation in aviation is around 30%? This percentage includes all roles in aviation from engineers, flight attendants, mechanics, and air traffic controllers to private and commercial pilots. But, only less than 5% are Latina!

In partnership with Latinas In Aviation, join the College Park Aviation Museum on October 2 and witness another “Field of Firsts” as it hosts “Latinas in Aviation Global Festival 2021.” The program is based on the book which features 22 Latinas across the globe as they share their journey in aviation. We are excited to collaborate for this inspiring program!

For more information contact [email protected].

One week left to register for Plein Air Drawing: College Park Aviation Campus!

What is “Plein Air?” En plein air or plein Air is a French expression meaning “in the outside.” The idea of “en plein air” was first introduced in the early 19th century as the concept of landscape painting where the artist paints directly what they see within the landscape. It wasn’t until the Impressionism movement of the late 1860s when en plein air became more popular. Artists were able to carry canvases and instantly begin painting, many painting the same subject but at different times of day, capturing various light rays.

Experience the joy of plein air with a twist of aviation by drawing the morning landscape of the College Park Airport! Be sure to pre-register for the first event on June 12 at 10am. For more information, Plein Air Drawing: College Park Aviation Campus event page.

Believe it or not, both images are aerial views of the College Park Airport. The first photo was taken in 1920, 11 years after its founding in 1909. The bottom was taken in 2016. As you can see, a lot has changed to the landscape on and off the airfield.

Over the years, the airport has been home to many firsts. On June 7, 1912, a Lewis Machine gun was fired by Captain Chandler from a Wright B, making the College Park Airport home to the first testing of a machine gun from an aeroplane. This is just one of many feats that gives College Park Airport the name "Field of Firsts". Discover more during a walking tour on May 15!

We’re one week away from the Tails of Flight virtual tour!

The gentleman featured in this photo is James Hyde, an officer in the RAF during WWII who originally hailed from Trinidad. Thanks to a law passed in 1939 that removed the discriminatory ‘color bar’ (restricting roles nonwhite soldiers could fulfill in the British Army), James was able to enlist in the RAF and become a fighter pilot in Europe. Like many of his peers, he and his wingmen chose to enlist in their unit a mascot, whom James is posing alongside. This mascot was Dingo, the dog. Like other pets and mascots during the Second World War, Dingo offered a gentle reprieve from the stresses of combat, enabling James and his comrades to unwind between sorties and attack of Nazi-occupied Europe.

To learn more about the roles of animals in aviation and to see the exhibit, be sure to register for the virtual tour on April 28th at 6pm. For more information, visit the Tails of Flight: Virtual Tour event page. 🐾

The College Park Airport is home to many “firsts,” including for women pilots. From the first female passenger, Sarah van Deman, to the first women to demonstrate an aircraft for the U.S. government, Berentta Miller. But did you know that the Airport also trained and hosted some of the first women to serve in the U.S. Air Force? These women were known as the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs.
Elaine Harmon was a University of Maryland student when she joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program, hosted at the College Park Airport. This made her eligible, at the start of World War II, to join the new WASP program and provide auxiliary support by testing airplanes, ferrying aircraft, and training other pilots.

Want to know more about the WASPs? Join Lauren Deutsch of the College Park Aviation Museum on Wednesday, March 17th at 12pm as she shares a virtual presentation about the history of the WASPs and their connection to College Park and Prince George’s County.

To preregister for this event, follow this link to claim your tickets. The event is free and open to all ages.

I had a great visit while my son oriented at UMD. While it is a small museum (Edited, I should have said in comparison to the Smithsonian’s and Air Force museums) it has great history and some great displays.
Local aviation legend and original Tuskegee Airman Herbert H. Jones, Jr. flew out of historical College Park Airport in the mid 1960's. He flew a vintage Gall wing Stinson. Herbert operated an area flight training school named Cloud Club II from 1986-2006.
