History of the Colfax Post Office from 1853 - 1980
The Colfax, IN post office was established on September 6, 1853, with Samuel Dukes as the first postmaster. Since that time there have been 28 postmasters, some serving at two different periods and one man, Jeremiah H. Blacker served three separate appearances of short duration, a month period, a six month period and the last one, eleven months. The postmaster serving the longest period of time was J.B. Williams. He was appointed in 1949 and served until his death in 1971. Roy L. Jones served 12 years and then transferred to rural carrier in 1948, serving in that position until his retirement in 1973. He and his wife, Edith owned and operated Jones Real Estate and Insurance in Colfax.
Delores M Hankins was first appointed as clerk in 1961, and promoted to postmaster in 1971.
At one time there were 3 rural routes out of the Colfax post office. The first two established in 1900 and the third in 1903.
In 1978, Colfax was made an intermediate office with rural routes emanating from Frankfort post office, the Frankfort office being administratively responsible for the rural routes. The route was served by Bill J. Culross. Judy K Bowen and Judy A Lucas were two part time clerks
