Join us at the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum for our next monthly Iron & Steel Heritage Forum Talk on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 5 PM Eastern.

Each month, we gather in the Lukens Executive Office Building Board Room to watch a Zoom presentation featuring experts from around the world who share fascinating stories connected to iron, steel, industry, labor, innovation, and history.

This monthโ€™s topic is especially near and dear to our hearts.

In the years since September 11th, much has been written about the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan. This presentation explores a different and deeply meaningful form of memorialization: the World Trade Center steel that was sent from Ground Zero to every U.S. state and 10 countries overseas.

More than 1,800 steel fragments have been distributed and incorporated into memorials around the world. Many of these local memorials were completed leading up to the 10th and 20th anniversaries of September 11th, with new memorials continuing to appear each year.

This talk will explore the creation of the World Trade Center, the curation of damaged steel for investigations and memorials, and the artists and craftspeople who helped shape these powerful memorials across the globe.

Speaker: Dr. Samuel Holleran

Dr. Holleran will be joining us live from Australia, bringing this important story to our community from the other side of the world.

This event is free for the community and NISHM members, but seating is limited.

If you have driven down South First Avenue in Coatesville, you have probably passed one of the most important buildings in America's iron and steel story without realizing just how much history is inside.

The Lukens Executive Office Building, also known as the Lukens Main Office Building, was built in 1902 to 1903 as the headquarters of the Lukens Steel Company. It was constructed under the direction of A.F. Huston, who was then president of Lukens Iron and Steel Company. The building was designed in the Georgian Revival style by the Philadelphia architectural firm Cope & Stewardson, and a rear addition was completed in 1916.

A.F. Huston was so particular about the brick that he personally studied the Penn campus buildings on Spruce Street in Philadelphia and asked his architects to match that look. That is why the building features Flemish bond brickwork, limestone trim, a slate roof, and a portico supported by Doric columns. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

For decades, this building was where major company decisions were made for one of the most important steel producers in the country. Lukens Steel helped shape American industry from right here in Coatesville, and this building served as its corporate headquarters until 1998.

Today, the Lukens Executive Office Building is home to the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum, where visitors can explore the people, innovation, architecture, and industrial legacy that helped build our region and our nation.

As America marks its 250th anniversary this year, the Lukens story is part of that bigger story. The mill in Coatesville has been forging American iron and steel for more than 200 of those 250 years. Lukens steel went into the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the Walt Whitman and Verrazano Narrows Bridges, the Seattle Space Needle, the NS Savannah (the world's first commercial ship powered by nuclear energy), and the support columns of the World Trade Center. When you walk these grounds, you are walking through an American industrial story that helped build the country we are now celebrating.

As we count down to International Museum Day on May 18, and to America's 250th birthday on July 4, we are inviting Chester County residents to play tourist in your own backyard. You do not have to travel far to discover nationally significant history. Some of it is right here in Coatesville.

If you want to learn more or see the inside for yourself, we would love to give you a tour.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Workersโ€™ Memorial Day | April 28

Today, we pause to remember the men and women who lost their lives, were injured, or became ill while simply doing their jobs.

Workersโ€™ Memorial Day is observed around the world as a day of remembrance and reflection, honoring those whose labor built our communities, our industries, and our nation.

Here at the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum, this day carries deep meaning. The steelworkers whose legacy we preserve dedicated their lives to demanding and often dangerous work. Their strength, skill, and sacrifice helped shape not only Coatesville, but the industrial backbone of America.

As we reflect at the Workersโ€™ Memorial, we honor their stories, their contributions, and their enduring impact.

๐Ÿ’™ Today, we remember.
๐Ÿ’™ Today, we honor.
๐Ÿ’™ Today, we recognize the true cost behind progress.

๐Ÿ—๏ธโœจ On this day in historyโ€ฆ Coatesville helped build one of the most iconic structures in the world.

On April 21, 1962, the Space Needle officially opened at the Seattle Worldโ€™s Fair, quickly becoming a symbol of innovation and the โ€œAge of Space.โ€ ๏ฟผ

What many people do not realize is that Lukens Steel, right here in Coatesville, played a role in its construction. Steel produced locally was used in building this architectural landmark, connecting our community to one of the most recognizable skylines in the country. ๏ฟผ

From bridges and stadiums to national landmarks like the Space Needle, Coatesville steel has quite literally helped shape America.

๐Ÿ’™ A reminder that our local history runs much deeper than most people realize.

๐Ÿš› From Coatesville to the Mid-Atlantic: The Early Days of A. Duie Pyle

In 1924, Alexander Duie Pyle and his wife, Mary Ellen, founded what would become one of the regionโ€™s most recognized transportation companies right here in Coatesville, PA.

The family-run business began by providing hauling services for Lukens Iron & Steel Company, supporting the movement of steel that was helping to build America.

As the company grew, so did its footprint. In this 1930s photo, one of Pyleโ€™s early trucks and flatbed trailers is seen outside a local feed mill in Coatesville. That same building was later acquired by the company and used as an office as operations expanded.

From these local beginnings, A. Duie Pyle would go on to become a major name in transportation across the Mid-Atlantic, but its roots remain firmly tied to Coatesvilleโ€™s industrial history.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Do you or your family have a connection to Lukens or local trucking history? We would love to hear your story.
