The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art joins traditional object-based learning with advances in interdisciplinary approaches. With its visible archive and open storage, the museum allows for unprecedented access to a collection of art and artifacts that span millennia and cultures. The Wellin’s state-of-the-art facility offers classroom space, a study center to facilitate access to and research o

f the collection, and a versatile exhibition space. By bringing the classroom into the museum, the Wellin functions as an exceptional teaching tool, available to students and faculty alike. The museum also serves the broader community, encouraging observation, exploration, and engagement through its presentation of exhibitions on the cutting edge of art, art scholarship, and research in other disciplines. Congratulations to Wellin exhibiting and collection artist Yashua Klos, whose 2009 work, 'Meteor Mountain/The Mountain of Crystal and Concrete,' has been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum for its permanent collection.

A Brooklyn-based artist raised in Chicago, Klos creates collaged woodblock prints that explore Blackness as both a constructed identity and an adaptable material for survival.

In 2022, the Wellin presented Klos's solo exhibition, 'OUR LABOUR,' a body of work inspired by his family's history working at the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. The exhibition brought together portraits of family members with mechanical and organic forms to reflect on labor, inheritance, memory, and resilience.

You can now see 'Meteor Mountain/The Mountain of Crystal and Concrete' on view in the Contemporary Art galleries at the Brooklyn Museum.

“Is it possible to photograph the memory of sound? Is there a way that I can photograph a space where something happened, where people were and witnessed it, and will the viewer bring their own memory to the photograph and hear the music in their mind?”

In September 2023, photographer Rhona Bitner’s solo exhibition ‘Resound’ opened at the Wellin Museum of Art. Spanning three decades of work, the exhibition marked the artist’s first museum survey and brought together pieces from the 1990s with newly produced chromogenic and archival inkjet prints.

This fall, Bitner’s work returns to the Wellin in ‘Storytelling: Photographers Making Meaning | Works from the Wellin Museum’s Collection,’ an exhibition featuring photographs by Eve Arnold, Rhona Bitner, Danny Lyon, Mike Mandel, Wright Morris, Bill Owens, Gordon Parks, Malcolm, Milton Rogovin, Lorna Simpson, and Garry Winogrand, alongside a new installation by Keisha Scarville.

Congratulations to our Registrar, Laura Laubenthal, and her husband, Erik Genalo, on the opening of A Mirror with a Memory, their new antiques and framing shop in Little Falls.

“As we collected, our tastes changed, or they became a little more sophisticated, and then we realized we kind of need to get rid of some things to be able to bring new things in. That’s how we became sellers originally. But it’s always been my dream to have a shop.”

At the Wellin, Laura plays a vital role in caring for the museum's collection and preparing for exhibitions. We’re thrilled to see her passion extend beyond the museum, and wish Laura and Erik every success in this new venture.

On Friday, September 11 at 1 PM ET, join exhibition curator Elizabeth Shannon, PhD, and Alexander Jarman, Associate Curator of Exhibitions and Academic Outreach, for a YouTube live virtual tour of the exhibition.

This interactive program offers an inside look at how photographers use images presented in series — at times juxtaposed with text — to construct narratives and communicate meaning, all from the comfort of your home.

This set of six dessert plates was decorated by Flora Winegar Brigham of Amsterdam and Cazenovia, New York.

Like most nineteenth-century women, Winegar did not have the opportunity to formally study art in professional studio settings due to societal expectations, lack of access, and prohibitive costs.

Amateur china painting became a popular pastime for accomplished young ladies, with periodicals such as ‘The Art Amateur’ providing design inspiration with monthly prompts and step-by-step instructions for ex*****on. These particular plates were manufactured and exported by Theodore Haviland of Limoges, France as glazed white “blanks” solely for individual decoration. Floral sprigs, insects, and scenic cartouches allude to Japonesque motifs appropriated by Western cultures as part of the Aesthetic Movement.

The influence of the classical world is closer than you might think. 🏺

From ancient Greece and Rome to the present day, Classical ideals of proportion, harmony, and balance have shaped art, architecture, and education across centuries. The works featured here, recently on view in Archive Hall, reflect the enduring legacy of these traditions within the Wellin Museum’s collection.

On ’s campus, classical influence can be seen in the architecture of many buildings, while objects from the ancient world continue to support teaching and learning through the museum’s collection. Together, they reveal how the visual language of antiquity has been reinterpreted across time.

You’re invited ✉️ Join us for the opening reception of “Storytelling: Photographers Making Meaning | Works from the Wellin Museum’s Collection” on Saturday, September 12, from 4–6p.m. at the Wellin Museum of Art.

The American photographers featured in this exhibition deploy different creative strategies in their use of images and text, to communicate their visions of the world. Some pictures were created specifically for publication in magazines or photobooks, often presented alongside a text authored by the photographer, or a writer who might have worked in collaboration with the image-maker. The author’s voice may significantly alter the viewer’s understanding of the visual material.
