PopEye Gallery proudly presents A Flowering Pep Talk Curated by student Rachel Moell in conjunction with Omid Tavakoli and is funded by a generous grant from the Fenn Educational Foundation. A Flowering Pep Talk features work from Joey Goergen, Nolan Meyer, Rachel Moell, and Destiny Ryan. These artists work with a confidence in mark and color that exudes vibrant, rose-colored, and bursting energy throughout any room they are in. The work made by these artists has a strong personality and has something to be said. They have an energetic voice, and engage and speak to the viewer in a variety of ways, from conversations of childhood memory to daydreams and pop culture. This one-night show is accompanied by a pop-up shop with zines, shirts, pins, and more from all of the artists in the show.
An opening reception for A Flowering Pep Talk takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 18th during Third Friday at 78th Street Studios. Immediately following the reception, local musician and co-founder of Survival Kit Brian Straw presents free performances by local bands and musicians in the gallery. PopEye Gallery is located in Suite 303 on the third floor of 78th Street Studios. As always, all Third Friday events are free and open to the public. On April 21st the show Thought Vacation opens @popeyegallery in the west 78 street studios building. This show is Curated by @joeysxworld in conjunction with @kid_indie13 and is funded by a generous grant from the Fenn Educational Foundation.
The 5 artists in this show, @justinmichaelwill @buzzsz @lit_subishi_mirage @whisperzone and Joey Goergen, all work in a way that is vibrant and often times whimsical. There will be wall to wall art covering the expanse of the gallery. Each artist will have a set aside space to do with as they please and to begin work with the space and communicate with the other artists in the show.
To coincide with the show, built into the gallery, will be a pop up shop where the artists will be selling shirts, pins, and zines.
This show aims to bring to viewer out of every day life and into a #thoughtvacation The title stems from life being filled with routine and undermining that lifestyle and poking holes through the 9-5. The idea also reflects in the work of the artist whether it be a desert waiting room designed by Karolena or an amorphous cartoon character crawling out of a pool at a picnic drawn by Justin these themes begin to tie into the framework of common life coming undone and being rebuilt into new light.
This show coincides with the West 78th street studios third Fridays and will be up from April 21st through May 16th and is located on the third floor in the Survival kit space that is used by PopEye Gallery.
