The Slovenian Museum and Archives (SMA) provides a resolution to the critical situation in the Slovenian Community of Cleveland today. We are rapidly losing our beloved ancestors, and we are faced with the real possibility of losing our ethnic history and identity as well. We are the privileged inheritors of a legacy, not only of precious pieces of rich, ethnic, artistic and linguistic works, but

also of a compelling story of migrating and thriving in America and in our City of Cleveland. We have an obligation to our ancestors, our families and to history to tell our story. Slovenian Cleveland, the largest community of Slovenians outside of
Slovenia, is now building its heart, a home, in which our rich and diversified legacy can be preserved and celebrated with our minds set on the future.

Tonight (Tuesday May 8th, 7:00 pm) at the Slovenian Museum and Archives, the Slovenian Genealogy Society will present a program by Thomas Kastelic. All are invited.

“Who was Ivan Kasteliz?”

Our speaker, Tom Kastelic, came upon a photograph of a Slovenian freedom fighter who was captured by the N***s and paraded with other captured compatriots through the streets of Celje in November 1942. They were imprisoned in the notorious Stari Pisker prison. Most were executed but what happened to Ivan Kasteliz? Piqued by his interest in a single photograph of someone with his own surname, Tom began to gradually learn more about Ivan and the brutal N**i occupation of Slovenia, including a trip to Celje to learn firsthand about this saga.

03/11/2018

Our March meeting of the Slovenian Genealogy Society will be held at our usual meeting place, the Slovenian Museum and Archives on St. Clair on Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00pm.

The speaker for the evening will be Jack Hribar talking about his 2017 book Jennie's Legacy. Jack was born in Cleveland in 1930 and went to St. Vitas, Wilson Jr High and East High School. His book covers 95 years of the history of his mother, Jennie Krasovec Hribar from her days as a child in Stari Trg, Slovenia, through her life in the Slovenian/American communities of Cleveland and Euclid.

This should prove to be a very interesting evening and Jack will have copies of his book available at the meeting.

I look forward to seeing many of you there.
