Did you know that one of the oldest homes in Clermont still exists at the Clermont Historic Village Museum?

The home was built by James and Sallie Townsend, who were the first black residents to settle in Clermont. The Townsends came to Clermont from Georgia in 1887.

The couple were outstanding citizens and considered leaders in education, religion and community health.

They had a small retail store near their home on State Road 50, just west of Second Street, and founded St. Mark A.M.E. Church which is still serving a congregation today. The Townsends also started the first school for black children in Clermont.

Sallie took and successfully passed a midwife-nursing course. It is estimated that she served at the birth of more than a thousand children, both black and white, in the Clermont area. In 1941 she opened a maternity home for black women.

The Townsend house was built in approximately 1895. It was moved to the Historic Village site in 2002 from its original location, (on what is now Highway 50 - just west of the Auto Zone store).

The Townsend home is open each Saturday and Sunday from 1-4PM for tours. Visit the Clermont Historic Village and take a tour down the rich history trail of Clermont and the surrounding area.

We had so much fun this weekend kicking off the autumn season with plenty of yummy treats, hometown conversation, and lots of visitors who enjoyed the festive fall setting!

Our visitors from East Ridge High School enjoyed the colorful photo opportunities that helped make homecoming night memories with their favorite friends.

Thank you to the many volunteers that came out to help make the event a huge success- a definite team effort made possible by all involved.

Visit the Clermont Historic Village Museum each Saturday and Sunday, from 1-4PM, and discover the rich history of Clermont, a town that has seen many changes in its nearly 150 years of existence.

History can sometimes hold interesting twist’s and lost legend, both big and small. Downtown Clermont, and its 130+ years of existence is no exception to the rule.

A solid piece of small town political history that was created in 1950 still exists today at the Clermont Historic Village.

More than 7 decades ago, local businessmen were in a debate with city council members concerning the placement of benches on the Montrose Street sidewalks in the downtown district. Council members initially rejected the plan, infuriating business owners in the area.

Retail merchants and the Kiwanis Club of Clermont joined forces to petition city council to reconsider. Many of the business owners and council members were themselves Kiwanians. As fate would have it, Council President Albert Johnson was also a Clermont Kiwanian at the time.

A long story shortened, the benches were approved the second go around and are still in existence today. The benches, over time, were removed from downtown sidewalks and placed in city storage or other public locations around town.

Several of the benches have been preserved and are currently in use on the grounds of the Clermont Historic Village and Center Lake Park.

Visit the Village on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-4 PM for a full tour of the Museum and take a rest on one of the 75+ year old benches.

More than 75 representatives from Central Florida historical groups gathered at Mount Dora's Sydonie Mansion to share resources and preservation tips.

The Kern House-Built about 1885

Alexander and Eleonora Kern, along with their two children, moved to the new settlement of Clermont, Florida in 1884. They traveled by steamboat bringing two horses and a wagon with them.

The Kerns purchased eight vacant lots on Montrose Street at the southwest corner of 5th Street, and built their two-story frame house on the property around 1885.

Alexander was one of the 31 pioneers who signed the original legal notice of organization of the Town of Clermont on June 9, 1891.

Mr. Kern also built and operated the first public water system in Clermont. In 1897, he purchased the Wilson General Merchandise Store on Montrose Street at 8th Street and operated it until his death in 1907.

The Kern home was moved to the Clermont Historic Village Museum grounds in 2006 where it has been preserved, maintained and furnished with era appropriate furnishings and decor.
