Coal mining in the Cle Elum area offered employment for many men. The mine tipple (where coal was loaded for transport)was located close to the mining family homes. This is a photo of Independent Mine on 3rd street Cle Elum, near where the senior center is located today.

What a great final speaker of our summer speaker series, last night, at the Carpenter House museum! Jeff Osiadacz told all about coal mining at Mine No. 9, up until it closed down. He shared in detail what it was like working in the dark/wet mines and dangers that entailed. Jeff then moved on to his 2nd topic and shared his encounter with D.B. Cooper! Another fascinating story!! We will begin our next series in May. If you have a story to tell, please reach out to us!! We love hearing all local stories!! Thanks to our wonderful and educational presenters!
