CLAYTON, NJ: HISTORY REMEMBERED: This September, 2026, marks the 15th anniversary of the closing of Marty and Barb’s. Early in Fislerville/Clayton history, the NW corner of W. Academy St. and Delsea Drive started as the location of J. Iszard’s store. Later it became the “company store” for F.M. Pierce & Co. ( a glass manufacturer, circa 1888-1913). In March of 1927, William and Estella Currington opened as Currington’s Restaurant or Quack’s, as the owner was affectionately known as Quack. Retiring in October of 1954, the Curringtons sold to Jim and Mae’s (nee Ida-Mae Ford) GODSEY. In Oct., 1966 Marty & Barb KOLSUN opened as a store/deli making it a CLAYTON landmark. The Kolsuns, in the Spring of 2006, retired and sold the business to brother and sister team Wayne Tanner, of Monroeville, and Meg Szumowski, of Franklinville. There was no name change to the store and Marty and Barb’s continued until it closed in January of 2010. Sadly, the building was subject to an arson fire in January of 2011. In Sept. of 2012, CLAYTON Borough authorized the demolition of the burnt-out, unsafe building. Today it stands as an empty lot being sold in 2021 to Darshiraja LLC. CLAYTON, NJ: Featured below is the official Borough of CLAYTON’s municipal envelope circa 1929. The envelope’s front highlights the Clayton National Bank at East High St. and Delsea Drive (still a viable business in 2026), Still Run Boathouse (now a private residence on Silver Lake), the CLAYTON Elementary and High School at Aura Rd. and West Academy Street (now the Silver Lake Academy House Condominium) and a street view of Delsea Drive looking north. The reverse side is an advertisement for CLAYTON itself. Clean modern conveniences for the late 1920s boast of electric lights, paved sidewalks, curb gutters, good drainage, excellent water. The Borough of CLAYTON was prosperous enough to support two financial institutions; the Clayton National Bank and the Clayton Title and Trust Co. For your spiritual needs, CLAYTON had three churches; today CLAYTON has around 10 houses of worship. Early CLAYTON had public community support such as a well-established CLAYTON Volunteer Fire Co. #1, Inc., a Free Library, a local bus service and 31 daily trains, all a walking distance within the borough. The hotels listed were the Davis Hotel at the corner of East Academy Street and Delsea Drive and the temperance hotel on Broad and Maple Streets. ~~

I have reprinted last week's post along with a (poor copy) of the newspaper article celebrating their accomplishments. Thank you to DrZay Whit for colorizing the b/w photo.......CLAYTON, NJ: A century ago, 1926 graduating class of CLAYTON HIGH SCHOOL was the largest graduating class in the school’s history. “……the Commencement Exercises were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church. The enrollment of 32 members constituted the largest class which has graduated from Clayton High School since it was founded in 1908……...”

CONGRATULATIONS to Alexus Paden, this year's recipient of Clayton Historic Preservation, Inc.'s scholarship. After extensive review, CHP's Scholarship committee chose Alexus from the 2026 graduating class of Clayton High School. Alexus will attend Eastern University in St. Davids, PA.~~

CLAYTON, NJ: “FIRST” K-9 unit: In 1970 CLAYTON’s Police force added a K-9 Corps to their five-man Police force. CLAYTON police officers worked with a team of three German Shepherd dogs over a 5 week training course at Little Ease Park, now known as Autumn Pasquale Park, East Avenue. The canine team was a great asset to the Police force as they patrolled CLAYTON’s 8 square mile residential area. The training consisted of obedience, officer protection, attack training, searches for lost persons or objects and narcotic detection. Each dog worked an eight-hour shift. The dog named “Whip” was partnered with Patrolman William Lindmeier, “Thor” with Patrolman Richard T. Burke and “Sequoia” with Patrolman James Sandelier.
