It's National Dessert Day! 🍰

During the Holiday Season, Charles Goodnight asked his Goodnight Ranch Lead Housekeeper, Ella Hubbard, to make his favorite dessert, Pecan Cake!

And boy, did Ella outdo herself every single time! The Goodnights and guests alike enjoyed the scrumdiddlyumptious cake. Believe it or not, you can make the recipe too! It is available in “A Culinary Journey Through Texas History” Historic Sites Cookbook, which we sell at our Visitor Center gift shop.

Goodnight Cemetery is more than just the resting place of Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight—it's where symbolism, prairie, and the stories of everyday pioneers meet. Learn about the people who lived in Goodnight and the monuments that stand to remind us of the Texas Panhandle past.

The program starts at 11 am at the Goodnight Ranch State Historic Site Learning Center. We will meet in the parking lot and take the site’s van to the cemetery. Dress accordingly, as it might be cold or hot depending on the weather.

Today, we honor the teachers who motivate and encourage students every day!

Students at Goodnight College benefited from excellent faculty specializing in fields ranging from agriculture to art. Mary Ann Goodnight, who co-founded the college with her husband in 1898, was a teacher herself and recognized how important it was for children and young adults to have opportunities to explore and discover, empowering them to become forward-thinking individuals.

The photo on the left is of the Goodnight College Administration Building; the photo on the right shows faculty from the 1901-1902 school year. The faculty photo includes Rela Vaughan (first row, center), a great-niece of Charles Goodnight who taught art at the college for several years.

Its international Coffee Day! Cowboys would often consume over 125 pounds of coffee on cattle drives. The way that they brewed their coffee is now known as cowboy coffee, which is still brewed to this day by people. In fact you can still buy a bag of Arbuckles' Ariosa, which was their favorite. So enjoy a cup of coffee today and remember the men who blazed the cattle trails!

Today marks the final day of the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo!🎉

For over a century, the fair has brought together food, fun, and rodeo for visitors from across the region. In 1914, the fair honored several pioneers, including Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight. Mrs. Goodnight took center stage to receive a bouquet from Judge Turner on behalf of the Ladies of Amarillo, celebrating her pioneer heritage. She was also the guest of honor at the Women’s Day meeting that afternoon, where the Amarillo Military Band filled the air with Southern songs, adding to the festive atmosphere.

This photo, taken at the 1916 fair, showcases several cattle on display. While we now know it as the “Tri-State Fair,” it was originally called the Panhandle State Fair until the name changed in 1923.
