Here is Evan Trine’s diptych, Self Portrait (Naked in the bathtub) and Self Portrait (In My Mickey Sweatshirt), nearby Christine Salama’s Buonasera. The stories we tell about our lives say as much about us individually as they do collectively. In post-internet society, we interact with each other via quickly consumed images and taglines as exemplified with Trine’s single pixel self-portraits; he feeds us his own image in a single byte. We also long for connections with the past— even someone else’s past through hazy details of stories remembered. Is this really how it looked? Is this “history” book telling the whole story or unilaterally distilling the past into a relatable format for today’s consumer? Today is the last day to see Aggregate as Self at and East Gallery. 📷 Sotheby's Institute of Art, Los Angeles

is a Los Angeles based artist - featured here installing his works 18100:18117 and 18118:18135. By breaking apart and reconfiguring form and space, Iain addresses politics of experience, issues of labor and environment within an unstable system. He cultivates instability and seeks possibility in a world of massive change. Conjugation, systemic complexity, and creative destruction characterize his interdisciplinary oeuvre.
Made of airborne pigment, dust and ash sediment (collected during the July and August 2016 California wildfires), acrylic binder, 10oz cotton duct canvas, burlap, vinyl, and milled pine - 18100:18117 and 18118:18135 are perfect examples of his range and process. 📷:

It is an honor to present Christine Marie Salama in Aggregate as Self. Salama works in encaustic to create images and objects that explore and fuse the experience of physical and ethereal spaces. Her work meditates on the essence of historical memory, and the experience of a fluid sense of space, culture, and time. Focusing on the essence of both material and incorporeal relationships, she melds the past, present, and future into one.

IRENE TSATSOS. As grad students of Sotheby's Institute of Art, Los Angeles' Curatorial Practices course, we are fortunate to benefit from instruction by faculty Alma Ruiz and Irene Tsatsos, two curators whose work has helped shape the contemporary art landscape here in Los Angeles. Irene Tsatsos is an artist, writer, and Director of Exhibition Programs / Chief Curator at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. Her essays have been published by the Getty, California Community Foundation, MIT Press, Onestar Press, Armory Press, and others. One essay of hers that we find inspiring can be found in the Feminist Handbook (pgs 16-19)—a pdf download—from Women's Center for Creative Work where Tsatsos is board chair. Thank you, Irene, for sharing your guidance and knowledge with us in this curating process for Aggregate as Self! CGU Art Claremont Graduate University

Evan Trine sharing his works and talking about his ideas to us in his studio. On the table are photographs of his newest collection that he is currently working on. His work echoes the growing social pattern towards a dependency on rapid information ingestion. These concepts, paired with the physical qualities of the work stemming from their digital creation and manufacturing, stand to challenge traditional ideas about image making in fine art.

Aggregate as Self will feature another great artist Trine. Evan Trine is a photographer and fine artist represented by Projects in Los Angeles. He has exhibited extensively in the Los Angeles area and at art fairs around the country and internationally. In the work pictured here (Collapse), Evan collapses the entire news headline, one letter on top of another. The result is an abstracted representation of textual information where individual letters are not legible to the viewer. Complex and beautiful, these shapes stimulate curiosity and imagination.
