The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art, located in the historic Claremont Depot, is a jewel of a small art museum that celebrates the community’s rich artistic legacy and promotes the cultural vitality of the region. The Museum promotes the arts in Claremont through its exhibitions and events and provides art education programs for Claremont schools. Centered by the Colleges, Claremont emerged as an important art community in the years following World War II under the leadership of Millard Sheets. Artists are integral to the cultural fabric of the City, having contributed to its unique identity and personality for more than 70 years. In the tradition of their predecessors, local artists continue to impact the quality of the social and built environments.

CLMA is proud to present FestivArts 2026 featuring Artist Kris Erickson, with Music by Claremont Voodoo Society.
Original work by local artists will be displayed for sale under shady olive
trees and in the beautiful historic building. The festival celebrates its 22nd year with craft demonstrations,
art making, face painting, tacos, and live music by Claremont Voodoo Society. This year’s featured
artist Kris Erickson will lead a participatory ceramic activity along with a display of her work.

Fill your day with art! Stop by Claremont Lewis Museum of Art and take in the current exhibition ‘Samella! Black as Lacquer & Iron’.
Samella! Black as Lacquer and Iron presents “interrelationships” which Dr. Lewis spoke of and taught by juxtaposing Asian, African, and indigenous art alongside Lewis’ early drawings and prints, in addition to contemporary artworks by and from her students, protégés, colleagues, friends, admirers, gallerists, and founded organizations. The exhibition will include works by Scripps alumna Alison Saar, African American-Finnish artist Howard Smith (1928-2021), Scripps’ ceramics professor Richard Petterson (1910-1996), photographers Louis Stern, Claude Lewis, and Harmon Outlaw, filmmaker Alile Sharon Larkin, and African American Quilters of Los Angeles portrait quiltmaker Alita Aldridge.
The exhibition is an elegy to Dr. Lewis and her leadership style of quiet action, openness, humility, compassion, collaboration, transdisciplinarity, and interpretation of sentience in the past and present arts of China, Japan, Buddhism, Pacific Islanders, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. This is a heartfelt homage to Dr. Lewis as a Scripps College art history professor and an acknowledgment of her living legacy as mentor, publisher, author, activist, innovator, organizer, gallerist, museologist, cultural ambassador, Fulbright fellow to Taiwan, wife, mother, and enlightened person.

CLMA’s Education program Project ARTstART hosted an exciting interactive workshop at Mountain View Elementary as part of CUSD’s Family Art Night. ARTstARTers led a doll-making workshop for elementary students and parents inspired by Alile Larkin’s “Auntie Samella” doll in the CLMA’s exhibition, “Samella! Black as Lacquer and Iron”. After learning about the historic legacy of Samella Lewis, participants made their own paper figures inspired by people in their lives whom they admire.

Join us for our next Art Night Out Workshop, ‘Decorative Repair. This creative, hands-on workshop explores the art of visible mending, where you’ll learn to get more life from your textiles! Using colorful thread, fabric scraps, and simple hand-stitching techniques, you’ll learn how to create an artistic patch to repair worn or damaged textiles, or simply decorate something that needs new life, all while turning the garment into something beautiful and uniquely yours. Visible mending is more than a repair technique—it is a conscious, sustainable philosophy that celebrates the history of our garments rather than discarding them. You are highly encouraged to bring 1 to 2 personal items from home, such as denim, woven shirts, knitwear, or tote bags, that need some extra love. You can either mend or simply adorn with a visible patch created in class. Practice materials will also be available if you prefer to build your skills before tackling a personal piece. All other materials will be provided.
No sewing experience necessary. Beginners are welcome.
About the teaching artists. 
Yvonne Cervantes Coleman built a distinguished career as a professional costume designer and on-set costumer in Hollywood. In 2016 she opened her first studio which is now Common Thread Claremont, celebrating its 10 year anniversary. In 2026, Yvonne expanded her vision by opening Common Supply Fabric & Co., an independent retail fabric & notions shop. 
Sandy Garcia is a self-taught folk artist, raised in East Los Angeles, where Chicano art, community protest, and a free-spirited upbringing, shaped the way she saw the world. Her paint brush, sewing machine, and hand working with clay, have become extensions of her heart. Through them, Sandy translates memories, emotions, experiences, and imagination into something tangible.
No sewing experience necessary, and beginners are welcome. All materials and refreshments provided. 
This is a 21+ event.
