When you can't come to the museum, let the museum come to you!
Right next door to Chippewa Falls, National Presto Industries, Inc. was founded in Eau Claire in 1905. Their state-of-the-art designs and technological advances changed kitchen appliances forever. We keep a few Presto artifacts on display because we're so proud of this local innovation. Did you know that Presto also introduced the world's first automatic, submersible stainless steel coffee maker? β˜•οΈ

We always love when current and former Cray employees visit the museum, and many of them point out "The Cray Style" and reminisce a moment about the work culture that existed at Cray. However it's not very often that someone will reminisce about WRITING "The Cray Style." Thanks for visiting and sharing memories, Jean!

To Los Alamos and back again, the very first Cray-1 supercomputer is proudly displayed here at CFMIT.

Back where it all began in 1976 with a Cray-1. Delivered to @LosAlamosNatLab, Cray-1 was the world’s first supercomputer and reigned as the fastest one between 1976 and 1982. #nationalretroday

It's the last week in February! As we count down to leap day, we invite you to join in on the fun! We found animals in all but one of our main exhibits (any guesses which one doesn't include an animal??). Every day, we will post a photo of an animal, and it is your job to figure out which exhibit this animal resides in. Careful - you may be surprised where we found them! Here's a practice photo. Watch for tomorrow's photo!

Minnesota Experience

Minnesota Experience

One of the greatest computer designers of all time, father of the supercomputer, tireless innovator, recluse, and serial entrepreneur Seymour Cray is this week's #HistoryCrush.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Cray moved to Minnesota following his WWII Army service to attend the University of Minnesota. While here, he worked at Engineering Research Associates (ERA) and then Control Data Corporation (CDC) where he led the design of the CDC 1604 - one of the first computers to use transistors instead of unwieldy vacuum tubes - and the CDC 6600, the fastest computer in the world when it debuted in 1964, giving rise to the term "supercomputer."

When he left CDC in 1976, Cray founded his own firm. Cray Research's lab and factory was located in his hometown of Chippewa Falls, WI. Within four years, his first design based on integrated circuits - the Cray-1 supercomputer - was unveiled. The Cray-1 and its descendants remained at the top of the supercomputer heap well into the 1990s.

Because he would get bored or frustrated, the Cray name bounced around a variety of companies: Cray Research, Cray Supercomputers, Cray Inc. (which is still here in a new space attached to Mall of America). Seymour Cray's genius was cut short sadly and abruptly when a car crash ended his life at age 71.

Learn more about Seymour Cray and his accomplishments Monday at 9PM on "Solid State: Minnesota's High-Tech History" on TPT2.

This looks interesting. I'm always amazed at how new technologies (online classes, video overlays) can be used to help us better understand old technologies (hand drawing)
Do not miss this museum, Incredible.
