Temporarily closed to the public

In an effort to be proactive in response to the threat to COVID-19, the Cook-Rutledge Mansion is temporarily closing its doors to the public. Let's help flatten the curve and reduce the risk of getting infected.

Wash hands frequently
Don't touch your face
Practice social distancing
Stay safer-at-home

Veterans of the first two world wars risked serious injury and death to protect our country; we are now being asked to fight another kind of war by simply staying home and entertaining ourselves.

We can do this!

Though the Mansion today is named for the Cook and Rutledge families, James Monroe Bingham is the man who first built the 1873 house that Edward Rutledge would later purchase and remodel in 1887.

Aside from fighting in the Civil War, Bingham was an attorney, a Wisconsin state assemblyman, a mayor for Chippewa Falls, WI, and a Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. Newspapers referred to him as the "handsome Norwegian". When he, his wife Justine, and their children lived at 505 W. Mill St. (now W. Grand Ave.) the home was observed frequently well-lit and filled with guests, as he was known as a social member of the community who entertained often.

Today marks the 135th anniversary of Bingham's passing. He missed his 57th birthday by just less than one month.

While taking pictures of the Christmas tree at the Mansion, inspiration hit when these beautiful figurines were spotted. We moved them out of the shadows into a more suitable location to photograph. (We returned them to their previous location when finished.) :)

Take a look inside the principal chamber of the Cook-Rutledge Mansion, including the recently-acquired and installed rug.

The authentic Serapi Persian rug was hand knotted in Iran (formerly known as Persia). It is made of 100 percent wool, circa 1930s, about 120 knots per inch for a total of 1.86 million knots. It took about 3,200 hours of labor to complete this functional work of art.

The walls in the dining area of the Cook-Rutledge Mansion are enhanced with lincrusta, the deeply textured paintable wallcovering.

There is so much beauty to soak up during your visit to the Mansion, it's easy to miss this unique feature.

Lincrusta is made from a pulp of linseed oil mixed with sawdust, plant resin, chalk, zinc oxide and a colored dye. The pulp is applied to a paper base and then run between two rollers. One of the rollers engraves the pattern creating the design relief. The authentic designs replicate the classic beauty of elaborate, embossed plaster work. Unlike the fragile quality of plaster, Lincrusta offers a tough, ornate, durable surface which actually hardens with time. (Description from wallpapersplus.com)

There's no disagreement that the Cook-Rutledge Mansion is a beautiful building, but don't forget to look at the details when enjoying a tour -- that includes antique Victorian bronze door knobs. (If those scuff marks on the woodwork could talk, the stories they could tell.)

The walls in the dining area of the Cook-Rutledge Mansion are definitely something you'd want to write home about. The deeply textured paintable wallcovering, called lincrusta, just screams to be touched -- but don't!

Thank you to Sandi, Kyle and team of excellent curators who took our Grand View Tours motor coach group from Marshfield, back into a delightful history and made everyone feel so very welcome. The mansion is indeed a very beautiful attraction & with all of your input, it feels more like a home than a historical attraction. Bravo!
Is the mansion getting ready for Christmas? Is there an open house I can bring friends to?
Beautiful. This tour captivated everyone from the 11 year old boy to the middle aged mother.
