Historic Neely School Foundation The Historic Neely School was built around 1908 by Julius Neely an AME Zion minister and farmer, and his wife, Katie Stokes McKenzie Neely.

During a time of segregation, The Historic Neely School was built in 1908 by Julius Neely an AME Zion minister and farmer, along with his wife Katie Stokes McKenzie Neely who was a housekeeper. It is believed to be the oldest one room African American schoolhouse surviving in Rowan County, serving more than 1400 African American children in grades 1-7 until its closure in 1948.
