The Grand River Museum is looking for docents and summer is the perfect time to start. Docent comes from the Latin word docere (to teach). Docents help folks navigate the museum and make sure everyone is having a good time.

Do you need to be an expert in our museum? No way! Plenty of time to learn as you go.

Do you need to be available every weekend or every Wednesday, for example? No way! We are open to sporadic drop ins.

Docents greet guests and give them some highlights to check out, they also ask if the guest is there to see anything in particular. Then they do some light dusting and glass cleaning through the rest of their shift. Sometimes, if we go several hours without guests, there are lots of projects ongoing and we may ask for your help.

We are especially looking for folks for our Saturday shifts of 1pm to 4pm.

If you're interested, send Dustin a message: [email protected] or stop by during WEEKDAY open hours
Weekdays 10am to 4pm
We are also open weekends 1pm to 4pm but Dustin is not there to discuss.

A patron was asking about Avalon College today, so we scanned in some photos especially for him.

From our Livingston County History written in 1981 and 1987 around our Sesquicentennial:

"Avalon:
The pleasant little village of Avalon is situated on the southeast quarter of section 14, about 2 miles east of the center of the main portion of Fairview twp. It was established and laid out by David Carpenter, Nov. 12, 1869.

The town was entered by Wesley Scott, Aug. 8, 1845, who came to Missouri from Jefferson County, Ohio in 1841. At first, he located in the bottoms, but the location was unhealthy, and he built a log cabin where the town of Avalon now stands, which long bore the name of Scott's Mound. He died in 1852 and in 1869, his widow sold the land to David Carpenter, who, as stated before, laid out the town.

In 1845, the country all about Scott's Mound was unpeopled and virgin. Herds of deer bounded over the prairie and wolves came out to howl and prowl.

The nearest schoolhouses were at Fairland, three miles east and 'Crow Point' the same distance northwestward.

Avalon, somewhat like its ancient namesake in France, stands on the considerable eminence before noted. It commands a view of the surrounding country for 10 or 15 miles, and, in a clear atmosphere, for a greater distance.

In 1869, the Avalon Academy was founded. In June, 1881, it was advanced to a college and remained as such until approximately 1910. For quite a period of time, the college was used as the Presbyterian Church but was sold in 1964 to Paul Barnhart, who converted it into a home, where is widow now lives. The Avalon grade school and high school was a large frame building, located in the center of town. School was held there until schools were reorganized and the larger Tina-Avalon District was formed with the school on highway 65 south of Avalon in Carroll County.

Long time businesses in Avalon were Finks General Store and Shields Hardware. June Johnson ran a grocery store and locker until the building was destroyed by fire. At one time there was an Avalon Bank.

At the present time there is the U.S. Post Office with Mrs. Frances Mitchell postmistress, a restaurant operated by Calvin Lawson, and a machine shop operated by Donald Deardorff. The Avalon and Wheeling Telephone Company owns an equipment building and underground telephone lines. The United Methodist Church has recently been remodeled. Church School is held every Sunday and preaching services ever other Sunday. Reverend Ray Willis was pastor through 1980.

Several mobile homes and about fifty houses are located in Avalon, with four or five having been built in the past seven or eight years. More are expected as people return to the better way of life.

This is our application for the sliced bread contest. Contest is held Saturday, June 13, 2026. Drop off is 8am to 10am. Judging starts thereafter. Winners announced and bread tasting at 1pm.

You may pick up copies of this form at the museum anytime (weekdays 10-4, weekends 1-4), or you may fill out at drop off on June 13, or it's on our website and will be on social media a few more times if you want to print your own.

FAQ:
-Yes, you need one form per item. I'd fill out the top, then make your own copies for ease of use.
-What is the age for youth 17 years and 364 days is youth. 18 years is adult.
-Which category: if it has yeast it will always be in yeasted even if you might think of it as another category. If there is no yeast and the primary additions are sweet it's sweet, same for savory. Raspberry jalapeno for example, we'd look at amount of ingredients, but if it was Raspberry jalapeno and the bread had yeast it will always be yeasted.
-What about other things like cinnamon rolls or buns? WE LOVE THEM! Just make sure to have at least four of each item. One for each judge and one for display.
-Can I take my bread home afterward instead of letting people eat it? Sure! Just know the judges, with clean hands, have touched it and cut from it
-I don't care about the awards, I just want to eat bread. Great! Come at 1:15pm and bring a bag or tupperware. We always have leftovers and we hate to throw them away.
-Why do you want my recipe? Will someone steal it? No, it's to know every item in the piece so that we can make sure it's homemade and also in the case of an allergic reaction.

We were blessed to have Mrs Graupman’s middle school class stop by yesterday during CMS Cares to help us with lots of cleaning and organizing. Now, we won’t say who was extra helpful as I don’t want more added to their chores, but the whole lot of 21 of them got more done in the first hour than I thought they’d do all day, so I quickly added a dozen more projects that they completed quickly and efficiently. One star even mopped 90% of the museum himself because he was in the zone. Truly grateful for this project. Thanks CMS!
